Retailer Safeway recalls certain foodstuffs

(Reuters) - U.S. grocery operator Safeway Inc said it expanded its recall on edibles containing grape tomatoes in several states, due to possible salmonella contamination.

The company recalled the cubes of meat called kabobs, which include grape tomatoes, from its Safeway, Vons, Pavilions and Pak N Save stores in several states including Arizona and California.

On May 2, the company had recalled cafe salads and deli salads made with grape tomatoes.

Safeway said no illness had been reported and the recall of kabobs was a precautionary measure.

The kabobs were supplied by Taylor Farms and sourced from grower Six L's.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune systems.

Healthy persons infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

The recalled kabobs were sold between April 26, 2011 and May 3, 2011.
