Were the locals paid?

Why did the search lead them to the area where the body was discovered?

Some one is not telling something. It may be an accidental death, but something is missing in this story. JMO

It seems the locals were not paid but volunteered to help search for Myles. Excerpt of an article above:

Friends found his body on Monday shortly after 16 clock at Steilhalten in Lauterbrunnen BE (in VIEW) - after the police search had been unsuccessful abandoned. It was a volunteer search party: an Englishman, a German, one Swiss and two Irishmen. "My son knew Myles for 16 years, says the mother of the Swiss. "Matter of honor that he helped."

Those volunteers who found the body would not tell the media why they searched in that area because of the ongoing investigation. I wonder one of them was a good friend of Myles who possibly spent the evening before with him or was in touch with him through the BlackBerry and knew about his plans? Maybe Myles mentioned that he wanted to go to Lauterbrunnen? Just a thought.

I agree, something is missing in this story. I wonder when Myles got so drunk as it seems he was fine when he left the Blue Monkey bar. Did he had some more drinks while he was chatting with Amy? In her room? Or were they only chatting outside? Did he meet someone else afterwards? It seems the Blue Monkey is the only bar which is open in Wengen until late at night. According to their website:

Mo - Sa: 22:00 - 3:30
So: geschlossen

They open at 10 p.m. and close at 3.30 a.m. from Monday to Saturday.
They are closed on Sunday. Did he possibly return to the bar? Or had some drinks (beer, schnaps, rum...) elsewhere? Or how could he get so drunk?

And I'm very curious what his BlackBerry will reveal. If he mentioned his plans. Or if he was with someone. And at what time he sent some email, text or made a call. Was he still alive at 5 a.m.? And if so, where has he been from 2.50 a.m. after he left Amy until 5 a.m.? Those are two hours and 10 min. It's a 45 min walk to the Steinhaldefluh.

From page one of this thread:

The Robinson family arrived in Wengen last Sunday and had expected to stay until January 2. “Monday was effectively our first day and we went skiing, had a family dinner and then my daughter and son went out for a drink about 11pm,” Michael Robinson said.

“My daughter returned at about 1.30am Tuesday morning and my son was still in the bar when she left. He is shown on CCTV leaving the bar at 2.19am and there was a group of them dispersing to their hotels.

“My son walked one lady to her hotel, where they chatted for about 20 minutes, and then she went into her hotel and he was, in theory, walking back to where we were. But he never arrived.

“She was just a friend and he was doing the gentlemanly thing of walking her home. His girlfriend was due to come out tomorrow and spend the new year with us so he wouldn’t have been doing anything funny.

“We woke up on Tuesday morning and he was not in his bed. Lots of possibilities go round in your mind . . . he could have decided to sleep on friends’ floors.

Dad seems to imply that Myles didn't go into Amy's hotel.... :?

Thanks. Might it be possible that Myles had a few 'hard drinks' like schnaps, rum etc. shortly before leaving the Blue Monkey bar and the alcohol had an effect on him some time after?

So what if he did? - does that make a person go hiking on a dangerous trek, late at night, without a reason?....If he was that disoriented he probably would have been noticed stumbling around town before he got to the trail....supposedly Amy said he was fine.

I thought the coroners report said that he had the equivalent of 8 small beers in his system? :?

A very drunk person can do very stupid things, IMO.
I agree, he would have been noticed stumbling around in town if someone was still in the streets at that time.

The coroners report said "two promille" which is the equivalent of 8 small beer and four times that allowed for drinking and driving in Switzerland.

My thought was if he was not seen drinking 8 small beer but less, he might have had a few schnaps before leaving the bar which might add up to that alcohol level. But I rather tend to believe he continued drinking after he left the bar.

Police ignored trail of skier Myles Robinson in death fall

The family of the missing Briton found dead in Switzerland last week tell our correspondent searchers failed to follow up a clear clue

John Follain

Cara Robinson woke up at 10.30am on the second day of her family’s holiday in Wengen in the Swiss Alps to find that the twin bed next to hers was unexpectedly empty.

“Mum, Myles isn’t here,” she called out, expecting her younger brother at least to have texted their mother to say where he had crashed out for the night.

He had not and the family instantly suspected something was wrong. Myles was assiduous in texting his mother when staying out late, often using the codeword “Wengen” to reassure her that it was him sending the message.

For the Robinsons the empty bed signalled the beginning of the worst week of their lives. So worried were they that they contacted the police almost immediately and searches began.

Seven days later their most appalling imaginings became reality when Myles’s body was found at the bottom of a 330ft cliff a mile outside the village.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Myles’s family said this weekend that they remain baffled at his death. Particularly puzzling is why the 23-year-old graduate apparently walked out of the village in the middle of the night to the remote spot where he fell.

They are also perturbed at how long it took to find Myles’s body and why the police did not tell them that, on the day after he disappeared, his scent had been tracked by a bloodhound to a spot near where his body was eventually found.

For Myles, from Wandsworth, south London, the holiday was to have been particularly special. “This was probably the happiest period of his life,” said his father Michael, 59, who runs a golf tours company. “He’d just got a business degree, he was ecstatic about finding a job with a financial services company. Plus Wengen is always the highlight of his year and his girlfriend Sophie [Harral] was coming out for New Year’s Eve.”

Michael described his son as “great fun to be with, very caring and loving to his family. He was a great friend to me”. At 6ft 5in, he was a keen sportsman and enjoyed skiing as well as golf and water polo.

The Robinsons had been going to Wengen — a resort with a permanent population of 1,300 and views of the Piz Gloria rotating restaurant featured in the James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service — for the past 15 years. They felt safe there.

On Monday, December 21, their first day, Myles tried out some skis. He had been promised a pair as a Christmas present. His parents also tried to buy him a ski helmet, but he had refused. “I could bash my head just by crossing the road,” he said.

After having dinner with his family at their rented flat in the Hotel Eiger, Myles left at about 11pm with Cara, 25, a producer in sports television, and a couple of friends. “Good night, see you tomorrow,” were his last words to his parents.

The group went to the Crystal bar halfway down the high street, then on to the Blue Monkey bar at the opposite end of the village from the Eiger.

“He was playing pool and chatting to loads of people, he was very happy to see them all. It was all totally normal,” Cara said. She left at 1.30am.

A CCTV camera filmed Myles and his friend Amy O’Brien leaving the Blue Monkey at 2.19am. He walked her to the Résidence building a stone’s throw away, where she was staying. They chatted for about 20 minutes before he left her. He never made it back to the Eiger.

At midday the next day the family alerted the police that he was missing. That afternoon a police bloodhound sniffed one of Myles’s sweaters and picked up his trail from outside the Résidence.

Rather than head through the village back towards the Eiger, it scurried down a narrow tarmac path that leads to the Moenchsblick viewpoint, a 20-minute walk away.

It is a pleasant mile-long walk through woods and fields, passing the odd chalet and hotel, but not one that would be an obvious choice in the middle of the night.

Indeed, Myles’s parents believed he had never been there before.
His mother Sarah, 59, a former chairwoman of the British Alpine Racing Ski Clubs, said: “I’ve been coming here for 40 years and I’ve never been there.”

A short distance away from the benches at the viewpoint, the snow-clad ground slopes at 45 degrees through fir trees for some 20 yards before a sheer drop down a 330ft cliff to the valley below. Here the scent trail went dead. For some reason the police kept this a secret.

Last Sunday the family started their own search with 70 volunteers and even consulted a local psychic who has helped the police, but his advice proved worthless.

Last Tuesday one of the family’s search parties, wearing helmets, explored the valley below the clifftop where, still unknown to all but the police, Myles’s trail had been lost.

They spotted a sock in a tree and then Myles lying near a big boulder, a block of ice next to his head. He had no shoes on and only one sock. A shoe was found later, by a local man, near the viewpoint on the cliff.

“The police asked us if we wanted to see the body but they said it wasn’t a pretty sight. They said we could wait until the next day when the post-mortem would have been carried out in Berne and they could have presented him to us in a more dignified way,” Michael recalled.

Michael told his wife and daughter: “Whether we see Myles now or tomorrow, it will be our last image of him and we should think twice about seeing him in a tent on the spot.” The family decided to wait.

Police told them the post-mortem showed Myles had a blood-alcohol rate equivalent to eight small bottles of beer. That same afternoon the police finally told the family about the bloodhound finding his trail.

Rose-Marie Comte, a police spokeswoman, confirmed this weekend that officers had not searched the base of the cliff on foot “because for security reasons we would only send people in emergencies, it was thawing and very dangerous with boulders and ice falling”.

The family curtailed their stay in Wengen on New Year’s Day, taking unanswered questions home with them. “The main question is why he walked where he walked,” said Michael. “That will always be a mystery to us. I just can’t imagine him walking as far as he did at 3am in completely the wrong direction.”

Perhaps, he added, Myles wanted “to go for a walk to think about life and his new job”. Perhaps he saw the lights of Lauterbrunnen down in the valley and mistook them for those of Wengen. How the accident happened also remains a puzzle. “It’s possible he slipped on something and knocked himself out against a tree and then fell.
But we don’t know whether he was conscious or not when he was falling,” said Cara.

The family accepted the police’s conclusion that there was no evidence of a crime. His injuries were consistent with a fall through woods and down the cliff and there were no traces of his fighting an assailant.

However, they do not see Myles’s alcohol rating as a satisfactory explanation. “With respect, the equivalent of eight small beer bottles is quite normal for someone his age, and he was tall,” said Cara. “He could certainly handle his drink. He wasn’t legless walking out of the bar.”

Sarah added: “His friend Amy said she didn’t think he was too bad at all. And they had a long chat in front of her home.”

The family also questioned how the police handled the disappearance. “Why did it take so long to find the body and why was it found by our friends and not the authorities? Why didn’t they look at the bottom of the cliff?” Michael said.

The family spent New Year’s Eve at a friend’s chalet “because that’s what Myles would have wanted”, but stayed away from the midnight countdown in the main village street.

“At least Myles died in a place he really loved, albeit in a horrible way. We just hope he died quickly,” Sarah said.

Michael added: “I’m just glad we have him now and he is not lying out there somewhere. It would have been dreadful if we’d never found him. Now we can do the decent thing and bury him.”

That's a good possibility. Maybe his BlackBerry will reveal something.

I had wondered if Myles had been at that spot before, the Moenchsblick viewpoint. And if he knew about the path leading down to Lauterbrunnen. In the article I just posted, his mother stated that she believed he had not been there before.

I think it's possible that he just walked along that path that night, leading to the Moenchsblick. It seemed he was not in a hurry, staying almost an hour longer than his sister, bringing Amy to her hotel, chatting with her for 20 min. and was not ready to return to his hotel. If he indeed had never been at the Moenchsblick before, he might not have known about the danger and he slipped on that 45 degree slope, was sliding down until he fell over that cliff. JMO.

London skier's family fly home body from Switzerland
04.01.10

The family of a man found dead in the Swiss ski resort of Wengen were today preparing to fly his body home to London.

Myles Robinson, 23, was found at the bottom of a 330ft cliff a mile outside the village on Tuesday last week — seven days after he disappeared in the early hours after walking a friend back to her hotel.

Swiss police said an autopsy found no indication that anyone else was involved in the experienced skier's death. A post-mortem examination will also be carried out in England.

Mr Robinson's sister Cara, 25, said his family, from Wandsworth, had not yet set a date for the funeral, which would be private. There will be a memorial service for his friends. “We're also thinking about having some sort of fund in his name,” Miss Robinson said. “Maybe it will be something to do with his love of golf or skiing, something to help others get into the sport.”

Mr Robinson, who went to Charterhouse school and Newcastle University, was on a Christmas and New Year break with his family and was due to start a job with a financial services company in Kensington this month.

Police launched a search and rescue operation when he was reported missing, using helicopters with heat-seeking equipment. A police bloodhound followed his scent to the Moenchsblick viewpoint, which overlooks a sheer drop to a valley. Police said they did not search the base of the cliff for safety reasons and the body was found later by one of the family's search parties.

Miss Robinson said questions over the police handling of the case were allayed after speaking to officers. She said: “It is an extremely treacherous route because it was thawing; understandably the police needed to protect themselves and they didn't want to tell us, in case any of our friends and volunteers went to look. They didn't want to end up with another 10 people dead.”

Mr Robinson's mother Sarah is a former president of the British Alpine Racing Ski Club and of the British Ladies Ski Club, and was “chief of race” at the British Land National Ski Championships. His father Michael runs a golf holiday business. The family has been going to Wengen for 15 years and have an apartment in the Hotel Eiger.

Mr Robinson's girlfriend, Sophie Harral, 21, had been due to fly to Switzerland on Sunday last week.

Miss Robinson said: “It's an unanswered question why he chose to walk that route. We don't know whether someone encouraged him to go down there, or what was running through his mind. But we have to accept what happened and we have to try to move on. It was a tragic accident. We just have a huge gratitude that we have his body now and can bury him in the right way and won't still be looking for him in years to come.”

I got a hunch we are not going to "read" any findings from the Blackberry.

Like others i am not at ease with what has been said/done re this investigation.
The police keep the infomation that the dog had got a scent right to the point at the top of the cliff (until after the man is found)
Then they say that they would not search the area at the bottom unless the situation was urgent !
Well how much more urgent could it have been?
If they had been along the path why did they not see the shoe (that was found after the body). The dog should have run to it.
The body of course may not have been there the day after, so neither would the shoe be.
The fact that a private search party went into that area of all the areas to search means to me
1) They had been tipped off that the police thought thats were he may be
2) Someone else led them to search there.
I know Wengen like the back of my hand, i have skiied all the runs and back country. I have walked hundreds of miles in the area.
There is in my opinion NO way MYLES would have gone there by mistake.
If he was there by choice i am amazed.
Locals did report some minor trouble around this period that was just a bit out of hand. Was it linked?
The last report of a signal from the Phone was in the South of Wengen in the area near Marys cafe.
I am still waiting for the outcome from the phone, because even if his phone was destroyed there will be a record of all calls and text msgs.
Why no news on this?

Gruezi!

Actually, I do understand why the police kept the information secret that the bloodhound had led them down the path where Myles fall to his death. The police also explained why they did not reveal this to the public: the area is extremely dangerous and they did not want that more people got killed.

I understand that the last 50/100 meters slopes down to 45 degrees before the edge of the cliff. And goes then down 100 meters. It's a theory that Myles slipped, fell and was sliding down some meters before falling over that edge of the cliff where he then fall to his death, going down those 100 meters. I believe it was the reason why the police did not search for the other shoe as it was too dangerous, too slippery and someone could have slide down this slope as well.

Have you ever walked in that area? If so, only in summer or also in winter when there was snow and ice? Did you ever climb down that path to Lauterbrunnen? If so, how is it like? Very dangerous or not? Manageable in winter or not? Thanks in advance.

The police had also used helicopters and infra red cameras who would detect a warm object like a human. However, I don't know if those infra red cameras would have shown a dead body. If the police was convinced that Myles was already dead and they would have been only be possible to recover a body, it makes sense, IMO, to not risk more lives but wait until it was safe for the recovery effort.

The private search team did not reveal why they searched that particular area because of the ongoing investigation. My thought was:
1.) The police talked to them and the risks involved.
2.) They already had some info, possible from the Blackberry, that Myles had talked or texted someone who knew that he was heading in that direction and possible had fallen down that cliff.

I would very much like to get more information about this case, the investigation and especially what the Blackberry revealed, if any.

But I think it's very much possible that no further information will be revealed to the public. It seems Myles death was an accident. And many times the police keeps the matter than private out of respect for the parents/family. His family returned to the UK already and had arranged for his funeral, I believe. They also accepted the police's findings about Myles' death.

CK, thanks for all of the maps and pics that you have posted in this thread. It certainly was a big help for me to understand the lay of the land.

It is so tragic.

I hope for the family that there will be more information forthcoming to help them better understand the whats and whys.

Hi all
I have now been to the spot to see first hand the situation.
Whilst the route from the village is mainly a single road, the final 150 mtrs is a narrow path to a couple of benches.
I do not know the conditions on the night but the slope is not steep enough (unless it was sheet ice) to create a problem.
The only way it could have happened without a third party is that he simply walked off thinking he was walking to Wengen.
After the slope there are bushes/scrub and then bigger trees (quite dense) before the cliff edge.
I remain unconvinced, however i guess we may well never no.
The village is full of stories due to lack of facts.
One thing is certain there have been strange events in Wengen this and previous winters. This season Mondays staff night off seem to attract the wrong kind of people, some of whom remain in town until the first train home.

You are welcome, YIF. It was a pleasure looking for those maps and pics.

I hope, too, that there will be more information. For his family and friends and all who were concerned with this case.

Hi again!
And thanks for all the additional info.

Did you see that there were posters distributed in Wengen who warned about alcohol? It seems Myles Robinson was not the only one who was in some kind of trouble which seemed to be alcohol related. I read some articles in German about it. Other than that there were no new news about this case.

What do you mean by "wrong people"? Drug dealers? I don't think that drugs played a role in this case. An autopsy had been done and if I remember correct, drugs were not present, only alcohol.

I hoped law enforcement would possibly reveal some info or explanation why Myles Robinson ended up where he did.

There was/is talk about a group who have be targeting the BM on Mondays.
There is talk of spiked drinks etc.
Yes i did see the posters around the village and on the Mountain, in several places.
The law in SWZ means only the family will get results and it will not be MADE public like in the UK.
It is possible that a drink was spiked not everything shows up in the blood. He was also out there for 6/7 days.
I guess the only thing for certain was that he died soon after leaving the club as the alcohol was still there.
I am still of the opinion that the answer lies in the BM. Or at least some strong clues.

His body was already found after a week. And as it was quite cold at that time, the body was probably still in quite some good condition, especially for forensic tests and toxicology tests. They can sometimes take several weeks, maybe months.

I don't know if it would be made public if drugs were found in his system. An initial test did not find drugs, if I remember correct. I think only if foul play would be suspected we would hear more.

Wengen: a ski resort with a bit of pedigree

The Swiss ski resort of Wengen keeps skiers happy by carrying on much as it always has done, says Joanna Symons.

Outside the church someone began to play an alpenhorn and the music floated out across the valley and up towards the peaks of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, which sit above the village like three wise monkeys. It is hard to imagine a safer, more peaceful place – and yet the village is still in shock after the unexplained death here in December of a British skier, Myles Robinson.

His family was one of many who return again and again to Wengen, and from its early days the resort has been a popular spot with British skiers. Hardy pioneers founded the Downhill Only Club here in 1925, as a rival to the Kandahar in neighbouring Mürren. The club still thrives, training young skiers as well as organising guiding and social events – and judging by the snatches of conversation I overheard in the village ("Ah, just the person – I've got an invitation here to our drinks party") there are plenty of regulars who treat the resort as a second home.

Thanks, Governor and CK, for the additional info.

Is it possible that someone followed Myles and Amy from the BM and then waited for Myles to leave Amy at the hotel? And then what? Was it someone he knew or didn't know? We still don't know anything about the 5am call.
