Robert F. Kennedy's estranged wife, Mary Richardson Kennedy, has died at age 52, apparently committing suicide by hanging herself, sources told ABC News.

"We deeply regret the death of our beloved sister Mary, whose radiant and creative spirit will be sorely missed by those who loved her," Mary Kennedy's family said in a statement released through her lawyer. "Our heart goes out to her children who she loved without reservation. We have no further comment at this time."

Bedford, N.Y., police responded to the Kennedy home in Mount Kisco, N.Y., at 1:36 p.m. today to investigate a "possible unattended death," according a news release. While police would not identify the person who died, the house is listed under the names of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Mary Kennedy on property reports.

"Responding officers confirm that a deceased individual has been located inside an out building on that property," the statement said. "At this time, the Bedford Police Department is not releasing the identity of that individual until notification to family members has been made."

The incident is under investigation by the Bedford Police Department with assistance from the Westchester County Medical Examiner's Office.

Mary Kennedy appeared to have hung herself, a family member told ABC News.

Mary Kennedy was Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s second wife and the couple had four children together. The couple was married for 16 years before a divorce filing in 2010.

Kennedy Jr. is the son of former Sen. Robert Kennedy and the nephew of President John F. Kennedy.

In 2010, Kennedy Jr. filed for divorce, according to the Journal News in White Plains, N.Y., a day after Bedford police responded to the Kennedy home for a "domestic incident" during which Mary Kennedy allegedly was intoxicated.

Three days later, Mary Kennedy was stopped outside of a school after she steered her Volvo station wagon over a curb, according to the Journal News. She was charged with driving while intoxicated after her blood alcohol level was reported to be 0.11 percent, above the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

She pleaded guilty to driving while impaired, the paper reported, and her license was suspended.

The next month, August 2010, she was arrested again for driving under the influence of drugs, according to the Associated Press.

ABC News' Stephanie Smith and Michael S. James contributed to this report.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s estranged wife, Mary, found dead in New York

Police confirmed a body was found on Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s property in Bedford, north of New York City, but wouldn't release the dead person's name. The family released a statement on Wednesday confirming the death of Mary Richardson Kennedy.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s estranged wife, Mary Richardson Kennedy, who had fought drug and alcohol problems, was found dead in her home Wednesday.

Attorney Kerry Lawrence, who had represented her in a drunken-driving case, said he didn't know the cause of her death at age 52. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.

Police confirmed a body was found on Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s property in Bedford, north of New York City, but wouldn't release the dead person's name.

The former Mary Richardson married Robert Kennedy Jr., a prominent environmental lawyer and the son of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of President John F. Kennedy, in 1994. The couple had four children, the youngest born in July 2001.

Mary Kennedy was an architect and designer and had overseen the renovation of the couple's home into an environmentally advanced showpiece. Her family cited her devotion to her children in remembering her.

"We deeply regret the death of our beloved sister Mary, whose radiant and creative spirit will be sorely missed by those who loved her," the family said in a statement issued by Lawrence. "Our heart goes out to her children who she loved without reservation."

Mary Richardson had known the Kennedys for years, through her friendship with Robert Kennedy Jr.'s sister, Kerry Kennedy, whom she met at boarding school. She had been Kerry Kennedy's maid of honor at her wedding in 1990.

She had had trouble with drugs and alcohol and had two high-profile arrests around the time her husband filed for divorce in 2010.

Kennedy was first arrested on May 15 of that year on a charge of driving while intoxicated after a police officer reported seeing her drive her car over a curb near the family's Bedford home. Her only passenger was a dog, and police said she had a blood-alcohol level of 0.11 percent; the legal limit is 0.08 percent. Her license was suspended.

At the time of her sentencing, famous family and friends spoke out in support of her.

Her mother-in-law, Ethel Kennedy, wrote in a letter that she "is a caring, nourishing mother who has nursed her four children through lifelong bouts of debilitating allergies," according to an account in Westchester's The Journal News at the time.

She was charged later that year with driving under the influence of drugs, but that charge was dismissed in July 2011 when a judge said the evidence showed she didn't know the medications she had taken would impair her ability to drive.

Fresh tragedy hit the Kennedy family Wednesday: the estranged wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. hanged herself in a barn behind her Westchester home.

Mary Richardson Kennedy, 52, was the mother of four children, the youngest of whom is 11.

Richardson was Kennedy’s second wife. They married on a boat in the Hudson in 1994 and split two years ago.

Richardson was working as an architectural designer in Manhattan when she became the Kennedy heir’s second wife.

They had four kids together - Connor, Kyra, William and Aiden - before he filed for divorce on May 12, 2010.

Three days later, Richardson was arrested for driving under the influence after police saw her drive over a curb outside a school carnival.

Police were called to the house in Beford several times since for alcohol-related issues, the Journal News reported.

Kennedy has recently been linked to actress Cheryl Hines, best known for her role as the wife of Seinfeld writer Larry David on the HBO series “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

He is no stranger to disaster.

He is the son of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1968, five years after his older brother President John F. Kennedy was murdered.

Many families have tragedies in their lives, but the number of tragedies in the Kennedy family is mind-boggling.

I get the local news here and it's been on all of the stations somewhat continually. The neighbors were interviewed and no one said they had ever had interaction with anyone on the estate. (They live on estates too.)

How tragic, especially for the kids, praying for that family.

Mary Kennedy Funeral: Wake Friday For Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s Late Wife
By DAVID B. CARUSO and JIM FITZGERALD 05/18/12 03:42 AM ET

BEDFORD, N.Y. -- As someone who lived at the edge of the spotlight that shines on the Kennedys, Mary Richardson Kennedy had been there long enough to become a partner in their rituals of grief – she was there when the clan buried Michael Kennedy, killed in a New Year's Eve skiing accident in 1997, and John F. Kennedy Jr., who died in a plane crash in 1999.

And now, the gathering will be for her, the estranged wife of Robert Kennedy Jr., who hanged herself Wednesday at the family's 10-acre estate in a New York City suburb.

A wake was planned for Friday at the family's mansion in Bedford, according to Ken Sunshine, a publicist working with the Kennedy family. Funeral services were planned for Saturday morning at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Bedford, with burial to follow in Hyannisport, Mass., where the Kennedy family has a compound.

The Richardson side of the family said in its statement that it was planning a private memorial service in Manhattan.

Her death, at age 52, came as a shock to some friends and family, even though the past two years had been undeniably tough ones. The couple was going through a divorce, and Mary had been charged twice with driving while intoxicated in 2010.

"A lot of times I don't know how she made it through the day," Robert Kennedy Jr. told The New York Times. "She was in a lot of agony for a lot of her life."

But Victoria Michaelis, a friend since Mary's college days, said she hadn't seemed suicidal, or crippled by the alcohol problems that briefly landed her in the headlines two springs ago.

"She was definitely suffering, but she was very, very spiritual and a resolute Catholic," Michaelis said. "I'd say she was depressed the last two years since the divorce. But she would put that aside and ask you how you were. I saw her a couple of weeks ago, and she was fine."

Her death resonated, too, with a public that has watched tragedy march through the ranks of the Kennedy clan again and again.

"I think every family has its tragedies. But this is too much," said Kim O'Connell, who dropped off a bouquet of Calla lilies at the family's home in Bedford on Thursday morning. She had met Robert and Mary only a few times, while working at their health club, but felt a connection anyway. "I just thought she was just a lady. I woke up this morning, and I wanted to do something."

An architectural designer with New Jersey roots, Mary Kennedy met her estranged husband's sister, Kerry, in boarding school when they were still teenagers and had stayed close to the clan through the decades before marrying Robert in 1994.

Robert is the son of Robert F. Kennedy, the former U.S. attorney general who was slain in 1968 while running for the Democratic presidential nomination, and the nephew of assassinated President John F. Kennedy and the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts.

Mary was RFK Jr.'s second wife, and she entered the family in less-than-storybook circumstances.

When they married, she was already pregnant with their first child, and Kennedy was only weeks removed from the divorce of his first wife.

Yet the wedding had the usual Kennedy touch of romance and politics. The ceremony was held aboard an environmental research vessel on the Hudson River, which Robert had been fighting to protect as an attorney with the environmental group Riverkeeper.

The couple's fourth child – Robert's sixth overall – was born while he was serving a 30-day jail sentence for trespassing on U.S. Navy property to protest bombing exercises on the Puerto Rican island Vieques.

"Mary married into the family. But, believe me, the Kennedys don't marry into your family, you marry into their family. So you're transformed when you marry into their family," said Laurence Leamer, author of the book "The Kennedy Women."

"And she was truly a Kennedy," he added. "She was a Kennedy in her interests. Her husband is one of America's leading environmentalists. So was she."

In recent years, police in Bedford had been called several times to the family's home. Twice in 2007, Robert told police that he was afraid his wife would try to hurt herself, according to records obtained by The Journal News for a 2010 report about the series of disturbances.

Police have said almost nothing about the circumstances of the death, but the Westchester County medical examiner's office said after an autopsy Thursday that she died of asphyxiation due to hanging.

A person familiar with the investigation into her death says authorities have concluded that her death was a suicide. The person was not authorized to release the information and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Robert Kennedy Jr. told the Times that no note was found at the scene.

Neither side of her family has discussed her manner of death publicly, but released statements noting her "gentle soul and generous spirit," her work advocating environmentally responsible building designs, and her deep love for her children.

"It's a terrible and tragic time for Mary, her family, and, perhaps most importantly, for Bobby and Mary's children, Conor, Finny, Kyra, and Aidan, and for all of us who loved her," said a brother-in-law, former U.S. Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy II. "We appreciate the expressions of condolence and ask for privacy during this difficult time."

In a statement released late Thursday afternoon, Mary Kennedy's siblings expressed dismay at the way she was being described in some news reports, saying it was "wholly inconsistent with the sister we knew and the life she, in fact, lived."

"She was generous, thoughtful, with a refined aesthetic, genius organizational abilities, boundless energy, physical stamina, and natural elegance," the statement said. "She laughed a lot. Her enthusiasms were deep. She loved to connect people, with no self-interest, and with great intelligence."

Political historian Thomas J. Whalen said he thinks the whole notion of the Kennedys being cursed is largely created by the media, but said that is the perception many Americans have of the family.

"There's no curse. It's just foiled family ambition, risk taking and bad luck," he said. "It's a large family. Things happen in large families, both good and bad."

Mary Kennedy grew up in Hoboken, N.J., the daughter of a professor at the Stevens Institute of Technology. She had two brothers and four sisters.

She was active for years with the Boys & Girls Club in Mount Kisco, volunteering for the club's annual fundraising dinner and hosting its Youth of the Year awards at her home.

With one of her children battling severe allergies, she co-founded the Food Allergy Initiative, billed as the world's largest private source of funding for food allergy research, and appeared with her family at its annual ball at Manhattan's Waldorf Astoria.

Mary Kennedy's body dug up, moved away from family plot
Michael Dwyer / AP

The body of the late Mary Richardson Kennedy, the estranged wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was exhumed last week and moved from its original spot among the Kennedy clan.

The coffin containing her remains was transferred 700 feet away and reburied in an empty part of the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Centerville, Mass. No marker currently identifies her gravesite, the New York Daily News reported.

Gravedigger Frank Maki, who oversaw the plot switch, told the New York Daily News that Kennedy wanted to move his wife to an area where the Kennedy family is now negotiating to buy 50 more plots.

“[Robert] didn’t realize how crowded the area was until after the funeral, and he wanted to have the ability to lay his wife to rest among her family members,” Maki said. “He opted for an area of the cemetery where there is room for future expansion.”

At the time of her death, Mary’s siblings sued Kennedy to have her buried in Westchester, N.Y., closer to where her four children live. But Kennedy won in court, and she was buried near Kennedy’s aunt and uncle, Eunice and Sargent Shriver.

Mary’s siblings reportedly weren’t made aware their sister was uprooted and moved to a different part of the cemetery, close to its entrance.

The transfer of her body to the other end of the cemetery is the latest incident in the bitter feud between the Kennedy and Richardson families following the death of Mary.

“We were unaware of this, and we were not informed about it,” Patricia Hennessey, the Richardson family’s lawyer, told the Daily News. Hennessey represented the Richardsons in their attempt to have Mary buried closer to her children’s home.

Attorney Steve McSweeney, who represented Kennedy in court, declined comment.

Aside from John F. Kennedy, his wife Jacqueline, and his brothers Robert and Edward – who are all buried in Arlington National Cemetery – most of the Kennedy family is buried in Brookline, Mass., the birthplace of JFK.

Mary, 52, hanged herself at the family’s estate in Bedford, N.Y. in May. Her divorce from Robert, who delivered the eulogy at her funeral, was still pending. Her death followed two difficult years during which she battled drug and alcohol addiction, her husband filed for divorce, and she was charged twice with driving while intoxicated.

The autopsy revealed that there were at least three antidepressants in her blood when she died.

Her autopsy report also revealed that her fingers were caught between her neck and the noose when she was found dead, perhaps indicating that she may have changed her mind about hanging herself at the last minute, the Daily News reported.

In early June, the Richardson family responded to accusations about Mary’s behavior made by Robert in a court affidavit from the Kennedy’s divorce case.

Kennedy claimed his wife beat him, threatened suicide in front of her children, ran over the family dog and drank until she passed out. It also asked a judge for an order of protection to keep her from physically attacking him, showing up uninvited at his homes, denigrating him to their children and asked that Mary be required to remain sober in front of their children.

The Richardson family slammed Kennedy’s account of their relationship, saying it was full of vindictive lies.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. failed to get proper permits to move wife Mary Richardson Kennedy’s grave
. . . .
By Beverly Ford In Barnstable, Mass. AND Larry Mcshane / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Thursday, July 12, 2012, 1:26 PM

The body of Mary Richardson Kennedy was found by her Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor.
Permits are for the little people.
The body of RFK Jr.’s estranged wife was illegally exhumed from her not-so-final resting place and reburied without the necessary paperwork, Massachusetts officials told the Daily News.

And in a shocking new development, Westchester death records obtained by The News reveal Mary Richardson Kennedy was discovered hanging in a barn at her Bedford home around 1:30 p.m. on May 16 — but not by her husband and housekeeper, as first reported.

The suicide victim was instead found by her Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor, a report from the Westchester County medical examiner showed. Kennedy, who battled drug and alcohol problems during her 18-year marriage to Bobby Kennedy, was last seen nearly 24 hours earlier by a caretaker on the property. She left no note.

Her recent burial relocation exposed a beyond-the-grave rift between her siblings and her powerful in-laws — a gap that was widening within hours of her suicide.

Bobby and Mary’s brother Tom, in dueling phone calls just 10 minutes apart, fought over which family would bury the 52-year-old mother of four.

The Richardson family boycotted the funeral after RFK Jr. prevailed in a court fight.

Kennedy hosted the wake at the family compound in Bedford and arranged for Mary’s initial burial near the Cape Cod graves of his aunt and uncle, Eunice and Sargent Shriver.

Barnstable Town Clerk Linda Hutchenrider told The News that no paperwork was filed before last week’s exhumation of the body laid to rest on May 19.

“When you deposit a body in Massachusetts, you need a permit,” said Hutchenrider. “And if the body is moved, you need another permit — even if it’s in the same cemetery.”

The new burial plot — on a lonely hillside near the cemetery entrance — was selected by a local gravedigger, who said no one from the Kennedy clan examined the location before the switch. The disinterment, just seven weeks after Mary’s burial near Hyannisport, was done without her family’s approval.

The News also learned that Mary Richardson Kennedy’s lawyers are seeking $278,490 in unpaid legal bills that RFK Jr. was supposed to cover from their bitter divorce battle. The June 25 filing by her attorneys described Bobby as “a tenacious and devious adversary. . . . Mr. Kennedy engaged in scorched earth litigation.”
