Arrest Warrant Issued for Saddam's Daughter
A revised arrest warrant recently posted by Interpol may finally lead to the capture and extradition of Saddam Hussein’s eldest daughter, who is charged with supporting terrorist activities in Iraq.

Raghad Hussein, who lives in Amman, Jordan, under the protection of King Abdullah II, was charged in November 2006 with supporting the Iraqi insurgency. But in the murky world of Middle East politics, neither the warrant nor the charges against her created much of a stir. She was, after all, Saddam Hussein's daughter. And in the chaos that followed the coalition invasion of Iraq, no one quite believed that the justice system worked there.

But now things have changed, according to sources and media reports from Iraq.

Vanderbilt University Professor Mike Newton, who helped set up the Iraqi War Crimes Tribunal, said the revised warrant was issued by the Central Criminal Court of Iraq (CCCI) – a different court than the one that gave her father a death sentence. “Iraq law works differently than ours,” Newton explained. "It focuses on the event or crime, and lists everyone involved. Western law focuses on the person and then lists the crime.”

He said Raghad’s name was among a long list of suspects charged with supporting terrorism. The new charge is based on evidence directly linking the 42-year-old to terror bombings meant to disrupt last month’s Iraqi elections.
In a letter sent in September to Izzat Ibrahim al Douri, the man many believe leads the Sunni-based insurgency, Raghad allegedly urged him “step up attacks on government targets in Baghdad " and to disrupt the elections. Al Douri, the highest ranking member of Saddam’s regime to escape capture after the war, is credited with organizing the insurgency after the regime collapsed.

The allegation that Raghad was in direct communication with a key terror leader and advised him on plans not only opens her to the new charges in Iraq, but also would violate the agreement she had with Jordan to stay out of politics in return for protection.

While Raghad's involvement has long been suspected, this is the first time documentary evidence has emerged.

So far, however, Jordanian authorities have reaffirmed their support for her, telling FOX News “that they will not give her up because she is the guest of the king and she is under observation all the time, so she is not getting involved in anything.”

Since 2003 Raghad and her three sons and two daughters have lived in a plush villa near the American embassy in Amman under 24-hour protection by the king’s security forces. The deal is simple: She makes no public pronouncements and does not involve herself in politics, and the king allows her to live as close to a normal life as possible. Her children attend the city’s most elite private school, the King’s Academy, and she is allowed to shop and socialize -- within limits.

Intelligence officials suspect that when she fled to Jordan shortly before the ground invasion began in 2003, she carried with her more than $1 billion in cash and untold more in treasures and other loot. Efforts to recover the cash and locate secret bank accounts have largely been unsuccessful. Intelligence agencies believe at least some of the cash has gone toward terrorist acts inside Iraq.

Raghad's husband, Hussein Kamel a-Majid, was a high-profile Iraqi defector who shared weapons secrets with coalition allies and the United Nations weapons inspection team after he defected. He was convinced to return to Iraq -- many suspect Raghad and Saddam's intermediaries persuaded him to come home.

He was divorced from his wife immediately upon his return to Baghdad, and he was murdered three days later.

Suspected Car Bomb Found In Times Square

NEW YORK (CBS) ―

Times Square was shut down on Saturday night after police officers found a suspicious package in the back seat of a car that was on fire.

A police investigation after a car fire was disrupting traffic, both on the roads and the sidewalks, well into Sunday morning in Times Square.

Officials said there were no injuries in the car fire, but that there was a suspicious package in the vehicle's back seat.

As a precaution, the NYPD Bomb Squad was brought to the scene and used a robot to inspect the package. Sources told CBS 2 HD the robot got up close to the package, but that its inspection was inconclusive. Bomb squad personnel then suited up and went in.

The mayor spoke at a news conference early Sunday along with Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

Kelly says the car contained three propane tanks, consumer-grade fireworks, two filled 5-gallon gasoline containers, and two clocks with batteries, electrical wire and other components. He says a black metal box resembling a gun locker was also recovered.

A portion of Times Square has been shut down during the investigation. Traffic is being diverted from the area and pedestrians have been pushed back from the scene.

Officials were planning a press conference later Sunday morning.

Police evacuated buildings and cleared streets of thousands of tourists around on Saturday after finding a device of some kind in the parked SUV.

A mounted police officer noticed smoke coming from the SUV at 6:30 p.m., police said.

Police evacuated several residential and commercial buildings and cleared the streets of people. Police were deployed around the area with heavy weapons on empty streets in the heart of midtown Manhattan that normally teem with thousands of theatergoers and tourists.

Shelly Carlisle, of Portland, Ore., said police crowded into her Broadway theater after the curtain closed on "Next to Normal," a show on the same block where the SUV was found.

"At the end of the show, the police came in. We were told we had to leave," Carlisle said. "They said there was a bomb scare."

The car was parked on 45th Street, and the block was closed between Seventh and Eighth avenues as a precaution, police said.

FBI agents were on the scene with the NYPD, and the matter is being taken seriously, said Paul Bresson, head of the FBI's public affairs office at bureau headquarters in Washington.

Authorities say a Connecticut license plate on the vehicle did not match up. Police are looking for additional surveillance video.

In December, a van without license plates parked in Times Square led police to block off part of the area for about two hours. A police robot examined the vehicle.

Clothes, racks and scarves were found inside.

<center>Time Square car bomb: Cops evacuate heart of NYC
after 'potential terrorist attack'

Three heroic cops and a quick-thinking street vendor stopped a madman from detonating a car bomb in the heart of Times Square Saturday night, law enforcement officials told the Daily News.

"It looked like someone tried to detonate it and we got to it in time," a police source said. "This is a big deal. It has the makings of a real car bomb."

The federal government views the incident a "potential terrorist attack," Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Sunday.

"We're taking this very seriously," Napolitano told CNN's "State of the Union" program. "We're treating it as if it could be a potential terrorist attack."

Cops evacuated and shut down the Times Square are Saturday night, but all streets were reopened by 7:30 a.m. Sunday.

The T-shirt vendor - a Vietnam vet - told Officer Wayne Rhatigan there was smoke coming from a Nissan SUV on the southwest corner of 45th St. and Broadway about 6:30 p.m., sources said.

Rhatigan approached the car, saw the smoke and sprang into action.

"I did a lap around the vehicle. The inside was smoking," Rhatigan told the Daily News. "I smelled gunpowder and knew it might blow. I thought it might blow any second."

He alerted two rookie female cops patrolling the area. Together, they pushed hundreds of people away from the scene as they called for backup, he said.

The Fire Department and bomb squad rushed to the scene.

What they found was stunning: a running SUV packed with three propane tanks, two red 5-gallon plastic jugs of gasoline, a clock, electrical components and a canister of gunpowder, police sources said.

"We are very lucky," Mayor Bloomberg said at an early morning press conference at the scene, still in the tuxedo and red bow tie he wore to the White House Correspondents Dinner in Washington. "Thanks to alert New Yorkers and professional police officers we avoided what could have been a very deadly event."

"The full attention of city, state and federal law enforcement will be turned to bringing the guilty party to justice in this act of terrorism," Gov. Paterson said in a statement.

Police spokesman Paul Browne said cops were investigating a report that someone was seen running from the vehicle at some point and are reviewing security videotapes.

"It looks as if the perp was trying to light it up, and was interrupted by the cops, panicked and took off," a law enforcement source said.

Cops began evacuating the Crossroads of the World as the bomb squad used a robot to get inside the car.

Tourists rushed out of the Marriott Marquis hotel and several Broadway shows.

Seven big shows went dark, including "Billy Elliot" and "The Lion King," which is located directly behind the would-be car bomb.

The curtain at "God of Carnage" and "Red" went up a half hour later than usual, but those shows were not canceled, said spokesman Adrian Bryan-Brown. Restaurants like Sardi's and TGI Friday's were also evacuated, witnesses said.

Police said the blue Pathfinder appeared to be stolen and had Connecticut license plates belonging to another car.

The man seen fumbling with the device vanished into the crowd and had not been found as of early this morning.

Cops closed a huge chunk of Times Square from 43rd St. to 49th Sts. on Seventh Ave. and all of 45th St. from Seventh Ave. to Eighth Ave.

They were pulling video footage from a number of security cameras in the area.

Times Square had been jammed with pedestrians all day Saturday.

Celebrities Halle Berry, Jessica Biel and Jessica Alba and thousands of women ran through Times Square in the afternoon for the EIF Revlon Run/Walk, which raises money for research to fight ovarian cancer.

"The death toll could have been enormous," a police source said. "It was a nice day and the Times Square area was completely packed."

Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly rushed back to New York from the White House Correspondents dinner when they learned what was going on.

Police precincts all over New York City were put on high alert and ordered to patrol sensitive areas, officials said.

The Homeland Security Department was aware of the situation, but the NYPD was the lead agency involved in the investigation, sources said.

"The matter is being taken seriously," said Paul Bresson, head of the FBI's public affairs office at bureau headquarters in Washington.

President Obama was notified at 10:45 p.m. Saturday of the situation in Times Square and commended the "excellent work by the NYPD," White House officials said.

"The federal government is prepared to provide support," a spokesman said. "\[We\] will continue to keep the President up to date on the investigation."

For his part, Rhatigan, 47, said he still plans to retire this year after 19 years of service.

"Of all the idiots in New York, I find this thing," he said. "I was almost a fireball.

"It's upsetting that someone tried to pull this off."

Big Apple’s big game: N.Y. lands ’14 Super Bowl
Owners pick open-air New Meadowlands despite fears of terrible weather

IRVING, Texas - Check the antifreeze, grab the mittens, make sure the airport’s not snowed in.

We’re going to the Super Bowl.

In New Jersey!

NFL owners voted Tuesday to put the 48th Super Bowl in the new $1.6 billion Meadowlands Stadium that this season will become home to the New York Jets and Giants. It’s the first time the league has gone to a cold weather site that doesn’t have a dome and, until now, those places couldn’t even bid on the big game.

The league made an exception for the New York area, and New York only. But just a few years ago, the NHL experimented with an outdoor game on New Year’s Day, and it was such a success that teams now fight to host what’s become an annual event.

“We believe the owners have the faith in us that 3½ years from now we’ll put on a remarkable event,” Giants co-owner Jonathan Tisch said on the NFL Network. “The greatest game in the world will be played on the greatest stage in the world.”

For all the hoopla on putting the Super Bowl in the nation’s prime media market, it wasn’t a slamdunk. It took four votes by NFL owners to pick New Jersey over two Florida cities, Miami and Tampa. Miami was eliminated after the second ballot.

If the NFL decides to wait and see how this foray into the great outdoors in winter goes, it could be until about 2019 or 2020 to try again because it takes a year or two to put together a bid for a game that’s another four years away.

The slogan for New York’s bid is “Make Some History.” The first piece likely to be made is a record-low temperature at kickoff. The current record is 39 degrees in 1972 at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, and that would be considered a warm February day in East Rutherford, N.J.

There’s never been snow in a Super Bowl game and that could happen, too.

The average temperature range for the Meadowlands area during February is 24 to 40 degrees, with several inches of rain, according to the bid documents. Remember, the game kicks off after sunset in the Eastern time zone, so temperatures would be dropping throughout the night.

Planners have factored it all in. They’re plotting giveaways to warm hands and seats, having hundreds of folks ready to shovel away snow and anything else they can do to make the experience more than just bearable.

<center>Ted Koppel's Son Andrew Dies After Drinking Binge
Posted Jun 1st 2010 06:35AM

Andrew Koppel, son of TV anchor Ted Koppel, died early Monday morning after a marathon day of drinking in New York City. He was 40. The New York Post reports Andrew went to an apartment late in the night with a new drinking buddy, Russell Wimberly, and was later found in a bedroom, unconscious and not breathing.

Belinda Caban, a resident of the apartment where Koppel died, said, "He was just really messed up when he came in. He was very drunk. I didn't understand anything he said. We took him to the bedroom and laid him down to rest."

"His complexion wasn't right. It was pale. I said to call the police," Caban said of finding Koppel later that night. "When the ambulance came, they said he was dead."

Andrew Koppel was an attorney for the New York City Housing Authority. He was Ted Koppel's only son and the third of four children.

The medical examiner has not yet determined the cause of death, and no one has been charged.

The Post reports Koppel lived with his girlfriend and their "baby daughter."

Russell Wimberly recalled meeting Koppel earlier in the day: "He had a straw hat on, and I had one on, and he said, 'Nice hat, man.' We got to talking, and he started buying me drinks. There was a lot of alcohol. He didn't take anything else [drugs] around me, and neither of us ate all day. We talked about our kids ... He said he had a kid and loved [her] a lot."

The binge led to a cab ride to Caban's apartment. Koppel and Wimberly stopped on the way to buy whiskey and beer.

"[He] wasn't feeling good," Wimberly said of Koppel. "I told him to lay down and turn the light off. He was snoring really loud. I thought he was out."

The Post notes Andrew Koppel was involved in an alcohol-related "fender bender" driving his father's Mercedes in Maryland in 1990. In 1993, he was convicted of an assault on a senator's aide in Washington, D.C., and sent to alcohol treatment.

The son of former ABC news anchor Ted Koppel was found dead in a Manhattan apartment early Monday morning after a day-long drinking binge. Andrew H. Koppel, 40, a New Jersey attorney, was declared dead at 1:30 a.m. on May 31.

NYPD Detective John Sweeney told reporters that the case has been turned over to the medical examiner, who will determine the cause of death.

Koppel's Son Died From Drugs, Alcohol
M.E. Says Andrew Koppel Died Accidentally From Acute Intoxication of Alcohol, Illicit Drugs, Painkillers

(AP) The son of former ABC News anchor Ted Koppel, who was found dead after a day of bar-hopping with a man he'd just met, died from a lethal combination of drugs and alcohol, the medical examiner's office said Friday.

Andrew Koppel's May 31 death was ruled an accident. He died from acute intoxication due to the combined effects of alcohol; heroin; cocaine; diazepam, the generic form of the painkiller Valium; and Levamisole, a drug used to cut other drugs, said Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the city medical examiner's office.

The 40-year-old Koppel had been out most of May 30 drinking with Russell Wimberly, a man he met at a Manhattan bar that day. He was eventually taken up to an apartment to sleep it off, said Belinda Caban, who lives in the apartment.

Caban told The Associated Press earlier this month that she and Wimberly spent the next few hours talking, and he went in to check on Koppel and said he was snoring. After six hours, she told Wimberly it was time to go and for him to take Koppel home. She said when they went to the bedroom to rouse Koppel, he wasn't moving, so they called for help. She said paramedics estimated Koppel had been dead about four hours.

Caban didn't answer her phone Friday. A phone number for Wimberly couldn't be found.

British-born Ted Koppel and his wife were not available for comment Friday, according to a representative. The family earlier issued a statement saying their son was "a brilliant, caring man, whose loss we will mourn for the rest of our lives."

Andrew Koppel's longtime girlfriend, Ilona Lieberman, did not return a message seeking comment. She had previously called his death devastating.

Koppel was appointed attorney for the city Housing Authority's civil litigation division in 2001 and resigned the post in 2008, the agency said. In 1994, while a student at Georgetown Law School, he was convicted of misdemeanor assault for striking a U.S. Senate aide during an argument at a cash machine.

Ted Koppel is the former longtime anchor of the ABC News show "Nightline," which he left in 2005. Andrew Koppel was one of his four children.

Afghan government: Taliban kills 1 U.S. sailor, 1 held

Insurgents offer to exchange body of one serviceman for militant prisoners

July 25, 2010
updated 1 hour 46 minutes ago

KABUL — The Taliban have offered to exchange the body of a U.S. Navy member they said was killed in an ambush two days ago in exchange for insurgent prisoners, an Afghan official said Sunday.

U.S. and NATO officials confirmed that two American Navy personnel went missing Friday in the eastern province of Logar, after an armored sports utility vehicle was seen driving into a Taliban-held area.

In a telephone interview Sunday with The Associated Press, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said the pair drove into an area under insurgent control, prompting a brief gunfight in which one American was killed and the other was captured. He said both were taken to a "safe area" and "are in the hands of the Taliban."

Mujahid made no mention of any offer to exchange the pair for Taliban prisoners. A local Afghan officials said the Taliban sent a message through intermediaries offering to hand over the body in exchange for jailed insurgents.

Abdul Wali, the head of the provincial governing council, said local authorities responded by saying, "Let's talk about the one that is still alive." The insurgents said they would have to talk to superiors before making any deal.

Posters of missing soldiers
Hundreds of posters of the two missing sailors have been hung at checkpoints throughout Logar province where NATO troops are stopping vehicles, searching people, peering inside windows and searching trunks.

The posters, with photographs of the missing sailors, state: "This American troop is missing. He was last seen in a white Land Cruiser vehicle. If you have any information about this solider, kindly contact the Logar Joint Coordination Center," run by coalition and Afghan forces. A phone number is listed along with information about a $20,000 reward being offered for information leading to their location.

The photographs show one clean-shaven sailor wearing a soft cap and another with short-cropped hair, wearing a blue civilian shirt and a white undershirt.

"Last night coalition helicopters were flying patrols," said Din Mohammed Darkish, spokesman for the provincial governor of Logar. "Our latest, accurate information reports are that they are still in the area."

He said the governor's office was upset because the two Americans left their base .

en Americans are leaving, they inform our security forces. This was an abnormal situation," Darwesh said.

Spur-of-the-moment?
Earlier Sunday, Muhajid, the Taliban spokesman, told the AP that he had no information about U.S. sailors in Taliban hands. He said he would look into the reports. He claimed responsibility in a subsequent conversation.

That suggested that the Friday attack was a spur-of-the-moment move and that the militants are trying to figure out what to do about it.

The two sailors left their compound in the Afghan capital, Kabul, in a vehicle Friday afternoon, but never returned, NATO said in a statement.

A NATO official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the event, confirmed the two were Navy personnel, but would not identify their unit to avoid jeopardizing search operations. The official said it was unclear what the two were doing or what would lead them to leave their compound. The official would not say whether the two were on official business.

Samer Gul, the chief of Logar's Charkh district, said a four-wheel drive armored sports utility vehicle was seen Friday night by a guard working for the district chief's office. The guard tried to flag down the vehicle, carrying a driver and a passenger, but it kept going, Gul said.

"They stopped in the main bazaar of Charkh district. The Taliban saw them in the bazaar," Gul said. "They didn't touch them in the bazaar, but notified other Taliban that a four-wheel vehicle was coming their way."

The second group of Taliban tried to stop the vehicle, but when it didn't, insurgents opened fire and the occupants in the vehicle shot back, he said.

Gul said there is a well-paved road that leads into the Taliban area and suggested the Americans may have mistaken that for the main highway — which is much older and more dilapidated

Bowe Bergdahl still missing
The only U.S. service member known to be in Taliban captivity is Spc. Bowe Bergdahl of Hailey, Idaho, who disappeared June 30, 2009, in neighboring Paktika province, an area heavily infiltrated by the Haqqani network, which has deep links to al-Qaida. He has since appeared on videos posted on Taliban websites confirming his captivity.

New York Times reporter David Rohde was also kidnapped in Logar province while trying to make contact with a Taliban commander. He and an Afghan colleague escaped in June 2009 after seven months in captivity, most of it spent in Taliban sanctuaries in Pakistan.

Also, Saturday night in Logar, Afghan and coalition security forces detained two suspected insurgents in a clearing operation, NATO said Sunday. It was unclear whether the operation was directly tied to the search for the two missing sailors.

In the northeast, meanwhile, insurgents recaptured a remote district of Nuristan province that has bounced between government and Taliban control in recent months.

Afghan police retreated from Barg-e-Matal before dawn Sunday after days of heavy fighting in which at least five officers were killed, said Interior Ministry spokesman Zemeri Bashary.

"The pressure of the attack was heavy on them," Bashary said. He said they pulled back in order to prevent further casualties and were planning a counteroffensive from an area close to the district.

Local Official Says Sailor Son KIA in Afghanistan
By ERIC S. PAGE
Updated 3:43 PM PDT, Mon, Jul 26, 2010

Source: Local Official Says Sailor Son KIA in Afghanistan | NBC San Diego

A North County fire marshal says his son was one of two sailors missing after a firefight with the Taliban.an.

On Sunday, after the Taliban claimed they killed a U.S. sailor and kidnapped another, NATO forces ramped up a massive search for the servicemen, who went missing two days earlier in an area held by the militants.

George McNeley, who is a deputy fire marshal in Encinitas, sent out an e-mail on Sunday night regarding his missing son.

"Last night at approximately 2200 hours, I was informed by two U.S. Navy personnel that my son had been determined to be missing in action in Afghanistan. Since that point in time several news release stories have stated different stories related to the subject of two Navy sailors that had been kidnapped by the Taliban. I have confirmed from posters that are being distributed in the Logar Province by the US military that my son is indeed one of the two sailors. I have no conformation if he was the one that is indicated to have been killed, or if he is the one that has been captured. I would ask that everyone keep him and the other sailor in their prayers and would hope that news reports are incorrect, and that both can come home safe. I will keep everyone informed as I receive additional information."

McNeley sent out a second email, this one on Monday morning, stating that his son "was the one killed in the conflict. I appreciate all the prayers and thoughts from all of you have provided. I am sure it will be a long road ahead and will need support additional support in the coming months."

Earlier on Monday, the Denver Post reported that state Rep. Jim Kerr, R-Littleton, told the paper his nephew Justin McNeley was one of two sailors missing in Afghanistan. The paper also reported that Justin McNeley, 30, was the father of two and was in an armored SUV that was attacked after its departure from a military base in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Calition forces in Afghanistan have set up checkpoints and distributed fliers with the sailors' pictures and were offering thousands of dollars in rewards for their return. There were conflicting reports about whether the body of one of the two had been recovered.

U.S. and NATO officials confirmed that two American Navy personnel went missing Friday in the eastern province of Logar, after an armored sport utility vehicle was seen driving into a Taliban-held area. NATO officials were unable to say what they were doing in such a dangerous part of eastern Afghanistan.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid also said the pair drove into an area under insurgent control, prompting a brief gunfight in which one American was killed and the other was captured. He said both were taken to a "safe area" and "are in the hands of the Taliban."

The sailors' heavily reinforced white Land Cruiser has been recovered, according to a security official in Logar who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose the information.

Another local official, Abdul Wali, the deputy head of the provincial governing council, said the Taliban sent a message through intermediaries offering to hand over the body of one sailor in exchange for jailed insurgents.

He said local authorities told the Taliban, " 'Let's talk about the one that is still alive.' " He said the insurgents indicated they would have to talk to superiors before making any deal.

Mujahid, in a telephone call Sunday with The Associated Press, did not mention any Taliban demands.

"We are going to talk about that later," he said.

The Taliban did not claim responsibility for the missing sailors for more than 48 hours after the ambush. That suggested that the Friday attack was unplanned and the militants were trying to figure out how to handle it.

Later Sunday, the Taliban posted a message in English and Arabic on their website that claimed one American service member had been kidnapped in Logar and said another was killed in a shootout, according to SITE Intelligence Group. The website message included a picture of one of the fliers, showing the photo of one of the sailors, but did not say whether he was alive or dead.

According to a translation of the website message by SITE, the Taliban have one of the sailors in a "safe place" where he will not be found. The message also mentions Spc. Bowe Bergdahl, the only other U.S. service member known to be in Taliban captivity.

Bergdahl of Hailey, Idaho, disappeared June 30, 2009, in Paktika province, also in eastern Afghanistan. That area is heavily infiltrated by the Haqqani network, which has deep links to al-Qaida.

Hundreds of fliers, with reprinted photos of the two missing sailors, have been distributed throughout Logar province where NATO troops were stopping motorists, searching people, peering inside vehicles and searching trunks. The photographs show one clean-shaven sailor wearing a soft cap and another with short-cropped hair, wearing a blue civilian shirt and a white undershirt.

The fliers say: "This American troop is missing. He was last seen in a white Land Cruiser vehicle. If you have any information about this soldier, kindly contact the Logar Joint Coordination Center," run by coalition and Afghan forces. A phone number is listed along with information about a $20,000 reward being offered for information leading to their location.

"Our latest, accurate information reports are that they are still in the area," said Din Mohammed Darwesh, spokesman for the provincial governor of Logar.

He said the governor's office was upset because the two Americans left their base without notifying Afghan security forces in Logar, which is the normal protocol.

"This was an abnormal situation," Darwesh said.

The visiting chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen, told reporters Sunday that while he did not have all the details about the missing servicemen, "from what I know right now, this is an unusual circumstance."

Mullen said he could not comment on the Taliban claim that one American was killed and the other captured. He says the U.S. was doing all it could to "return to American hands anybody who has been captured or killed."

"There's a tremendous amount of effort going on to find them, to search, and beyond that I can't discuss any additional details at this time. It serves to remind of the challenges that we have and also the service and sacrifice that so many make, but that's really all I can talk about."

The Afghan security official who spoke on condition of anonymity claimed that the body of one of the sailors was recovered Sunday in the village of Argan in Charkh district, but a NATO official said the coalition did not have confirmation of the status or condition of either of the two.

The NATO official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose the information, declined to say which base the two left from, or why they were traveling in Logar.

Gul said there is a well-paved road that leads into the Taliban area and suggested the Americans may have mistaken that for the main highway — which is much older and more dilapidated.

The security official in Logar said the Taliban fired AK-47s and machine guns at the sailors' armored vehicle and then struck the vehicle with a rocket-propelled grenade. The two then left the vehicle, and continued to return fire. The official said one sailor was killed and the other gave himself up.

Harold Dow, Veteran CBS News Correspondent, Dies
Five-Time Emmy Award Winner Worked on "48 Hours" Since 1988 Premiere, Interviewed Patricia Hearst, O.J. Simpson

Longtime CBS News Correspondent Harold Dow died suddenly Saturday morning of an apparent asthma attack.

Dow has been a correspondent for "48 Hours" since 1990 after serving as a contributor to the broadcast since its premiere Jan. 19, 1988. Dow was also a contributor to the critically acclaimed 1986 documentary "48 Hours on Crack Street," which led to creation of the single-topic weekly news magazine.

"CBS News is deeply saddened by this sudden loss," said Sean McManus, president of CBS News and Sports. "The CBS News family has lost one of its oldest and most talented members, whose absence will be felt by many and whose on-air presence and reporting skills touched nearly all of our broadcasts. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife Kathy and their children Joelle, Danica and David."

Dow's family released the following statement on Sunday:

"At the time of Harold's death, he was suffering from adult onset asthma. On Monday, Aug. 16, 2010, Harold checked himself into the Valley Hospital emergency room in Ridgewood (N.J.) for severe asthmatic symptoms. According to the Hackensack Police Department incident report, an inhaler was found on the floor of Harold's vehicle. Therefore, it is believed at this time that Harold succumbed to an asthma attack while behind the wheel."

Over the course of his distinguished career at the network, Dow served as a correspondent for the CBS News magazine "Street Stories" (1992-93) and reported for the "CBS Evening News with Dan Rather," "Sunday Morning" and the CBS News legal series, "Verdict." He served as co-anchor on "CBS News Nightwatch" (1982-83), prior to which he had been a correspondent (1977-82) and reporter (1973-77) at the CBS News Los Angeles bureau.

He has covered many of the most important stories of our times, including 9/11, where he barely escaped one of the falling Twin Towers; the return of POW's from Vietnam; the kidnapping of Patricia Hearst, with whom he had an exclusive interview in December 1976; the movement of American troops into Bosnia and the Pan Am Flight 103 disaster. He also conducted the first network interview with O. J. Simpson following the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.

"Harold Dow was a reporter for the ages. Insatiably curious, he was happiest when he was on the road deep into a story. He took pride in every story he did," said "48 Hours Mystery" Executive Producer Susan Zirinsky. "It was his humanity, which was felt by everyone he encountered, even in his toughest interviews, that truly defined the greatness of his work. He was the most selfless man I have known. It is a tremendous loss for '48 Hours,' CBS News and the world of journalism. I deeply miss him already."

Dow's reports have garnered him numerous awards. He has been honored with a George Foster Peabody Award for his "48 Hours" report on runaways and a Robert F. Kennedy Award for a report on public housing. He has received five Emmy Awards, including one for a story on the American troops' movement into Bosnia (1996) and one for "distinguished reporting" for his coverage of the Pan Am Flight 103 disaster (1989). He won an RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Award, an Operation Push Excellence in Journalism Award and, for a "48 Hours" profile of Patti LaBelle. He also was recently recognized by the National Association of Black Journalists for his report about Medgar Evers, which was featured in the CBS News special "Change and Challenge: The Inauguration of Barack Obama."

Dow began his career at CBS News in 1972 as a broadcast associate. Before joining CBS News, Dow, who has been based in New York since 1982, had been an anchor at Theta Cable TV in Santa Monica, Calif. He was also a freelance reporter for KCOP-TV Los Angeles and a news anchor for WPAT Radio in Paterson, N.J. Dow became the first African American television reporter in Omaha, Neb., where he served as co-anchor and talk-show host for KETV Omaha.

Dow was born in Hackensack, N.J., and attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

New Hearing Ordered For WM3 Defendants

Postby Obscuregawdess » Thu Nov 04, 2010 9:56 am

The Arkansas Supreme Court ordered new hearings Thursday for the three men convicted in the 1993 murders of three West Memphis Cub Scouts. The justices ordered a new hearing on whether newly analyzed DNA evidence and other testimony could exonerate death-row inmateDamien Echols and two others convicted in the case. Jesse Misskelley and Jason Baldwin are serving terms of life in prison.

In separate orders, the high court on Thursday sent their cases back to a lower court for hearings.

Echols has been on Arkansas' death row since 1994 after he was arrested as a teen for the deaths of the three boys. The Arkansas Supreme Court has previously affirmed the convictions.

Echols' attorneys argue new DNA evidence will exonerate the men.
