What would have happened if Ponson was just another Aruban guy without a baseball contract who popped a judge in the face?

Probably the same.

A small piece of a newsletter from an officer of justice (Aruba) to
a University magazine. I keep it anonymous.
You have to get the translation yourself.
But that's a piece of cake non.

Over ontboezemingen gesproken!"

I don't think the case would have been handled the same way if Ponson was just the typical Aruban beach goer slugging a judge. :D

Deference was made - it happens everywhere. Why deny it happens on Aruba?

Cute letter - no trouble at all in translating.

It happens but no it doesn't happen everywhere.
You are making assumptions from your experiences of how things work in your own country I guess.

For the most part these are standard rulings and of course within margins.
First offender or not, different personal circumstances. I don't know for sure but the taxidriver is probably still driving his taxi. Got a second chance. And the beach goer still goes to the beach.

You have to ask yourself though, if Poson knew his victim was a judge, would he have hit him. Because he must have known he could not pay off a judge here. May be he could in the Ununited States of A. but not in Aruba. So he ended up in court. The only difference: Booshi the beachgoer would have been a small note in the media.
Mr. Ponson made the frontpages a couple of times.

I am making assumptions based on reading over 5 years of Dutch and ABC islands and the goings-on in those places.

I don't know what Ponson knew or didn't know. I think he was probably drunk, as were the people on the other water craft and for all I know - the judge was too. It was the holidays - nothing wrong if the judge was drinking and mouthy ( if such was the case) Ponson still shouldn't have punched him - I doubt if the judge was acting as a referee on the beach between who had the watercraft right away.

My point is that deference was made - as I believe deference was made in the van der Sloot case.

You can view it as it making the news because of Ponson being a ballplayer....I see it as nothing would have been done about a fight on the beach if it wasn't for the fact that the person who got punched was a judge.

The 28-year-old Ponson is accused of committing violence alone or in the company of others in public, kicking a person in the head and battering a person by hitting him in the face with his fist.

If convicted, Ponson faces a maximum sentence of four years in jail, a fine and community service.

Judge Bob Wit, flown in from the nearby Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao to give the case a sense of impartiality, said he took the pitcher's career into consideration in postponing the case.

Wit said that Ponson's livelihood could be jeopardized if he has a criminal record because his U.S. work visa could be taken away. Ponson was born in Aruba, a semiautonomous Dutch Caribbean territory.

"The judge gave a type of cooperation very different from other cases, and for this we are grateful," Ponson's attorney, Chris Lejuez, said outside the courtroom.

Ponson did not make any comments to the media and his agent Barry Paver said the pitcher would return to Florida for spring training later Thursday.

Wit also ordered Ponson to make a considerable donation to a charitable organization in Aruba.

The man Ponson is accused of assaulting, a local judge, declined to comment.

So you read TexasMom's papiamento translations from the papers at SM? You should join them with your "experience" of "those places".

Or do you still have that zealous translator at the Fence?

Really? The subtitles must be way off in your country, in English he's a jackass. Goes to show important a good translation can be.

Looks like The Flipper didn't pay his dues this month

I am pretty sure I was aware of the sarcasm and responding in kind and bringing in all the translation discussions together seemed a like a nice package deal.

After discovering that Winfrey was planning to interview Beth Holloway, one of McGraw's producers emailed him, laying out a plan to scoop Winfrey: "But we can OUT SCOOP Oprah & do the show w/ (Holloway) first no matter what we find tomorrow we still have an interesting show - plus only YOU can really help."

The producer ended the email conversation by writing, "Grea[t] & she won't say anything to oprahs peeps she knows it would jeopardize what we are doing - I'll email you both tomorrow as soon as I talk to jamie & we can go from there!! Yippie scoopen the big O!!"

"if we get the suspects to confess"

``Aruban Asshole``

Would appear to reflect the lack of "understanding".

The thinking that some "colored folk" down there in them islands gonna roll over and die.

Oh Dear,
