5 NEWS UPDATE: Authorities Searching for Missing 3-Year-Old Girl

Last Updated on Sunday, 25 September 2011 18:05 Written by Ashton Marra Saturday, 24 September 2011 14:48

UPDATE: (9/25/11)

As dive teams from multiple counties slowly search the water near her home, Aliyah Lunsford's family is still waiting for word of the missing three-year-old, and are now reaching out to the community for help.

"Around 9 or 9:30, I went back in to wake her up and she was gone," said Lena Lunsford, Aliayah's mother.

Three-year-old Aliayah Lunsford went missing from her Bendale home Saturday morning, and ever since, search teams have turned her typically quiet neighborhood upside down in hopes of bringing her home.

"We've done a foot canvas of the neghborhood, used k-9s, now we have divers in the water. We've entered her in as missing," said Sgt. Michael Posey of the Lewis County Sheriff's Department.

Family members say Aliayah is a shy child. They say she never talks to strangers and would never have wandered off alone.

"She never leaves the house unless an adult is with her. She wouldn't have come out in the yard, or the road for that matter, without her mother," said Joann Evans, Aliayah's Grandmother.

Saturday, K-9 units from Lumberport and the South Charleston State police Detachment combed through the surrounding area and picked up a trail just down the road. A search that started int he Dennison Street home has lead crews to the banks of the West Fork River, but police say they're still unsure if the river holds the answers to Aliayah's disappearance. Police say they've dealt with missing persons cases in the past, but Aliyah's is unlike any other.

"Right now there are no clues leading us anywhere. No clues. It's like she's just disappeared," Posey said.

And as family members wait out the search, they say all they can do is ask for your help...

"They are doing everything that they possibly can, but the more people we can get to help, the better chances of bringing her home," Lunsford said.

...and pray for answers.

"We love her. We miss her," Evans said.

"We want her home," Lunsford said.

BENDALE -- UPDATE Monday Sept. 26 6:08 p.m.

It has been more than three days since anyone has seen Aliayah Lunsford.

She disappeared from her home in Bendale near Weston early Saturday morning.

Boat teams, canine units and foot crews have scoured woods, streets and water searching for any sign of Aliayah.

"Christmas Day, when she was going to open up her presents, she always opens up the biggest ones first and the smallest ones for last. She was really, really proud of what she got for Christmas. I just want her back home," Wendy Swiger, Aliayah's aunt, said.

Her family says Aliayah would not wander off on her own, and family and acquaintances shared stories about a girl who loves cats and dogs, saying her smile could light up a room.

"She was a special little girl. She wouldn't go to no strangers. She was pretty close to the family, and we just want her home," Sherri Prunty, Aliayah's aunt, said.

Dive teams, canines and volunteers canvassed the West Fork River around Aliayah's home.

On Monday, they expanded the search around Lewis County High School, still finding no trace of the three-year-old.

Jeff Whittington and Brittany McVay live across from the Lunsfords and have been out searching for Aliayah.

For the couple, Aliayah's disappearance hit close to home.

"It's hard on everybody. The community's pulled together, and we've done a lot. Myself, personally, I've been searching, I can't even count the hours I've been out there searching," Whittington said.

McVay is praying that Aliayah is found.

"I went up and talked to her [Aliayah's mother] the day that I found out she was missing and gave her a hug and said a prayer for her and cried with her. I have a child the same age. I couldn't imagine losing him. Just to feel the heartache she's going through. My heart goes out to her family," McVay said.

The search will continue through Monday and will resume Tuesday morning.

A rest area for volunteers and law enforcement is located at the Bendale United Methodist Church next to the Armory.

Authorities ask that anyone with information call the Lewis County Emergency Dispatch at 304-269-8241.

Still No Sign Of Missing Lewis Girl
Reuben Perdue, WAJR-FM
Weston, Lewis County

The search continues for a three year old girl who went missing in Lewis County over the weekend.

Lewis County Sheriff Michael Gissy tells MetroNews Affiliate WAJR-FM in Clarksburg the effort is still considered a search and rescue mission. But, "We're running out of any leads. We're exhausting our efforts in the immediate area," he said on Monday afternoon, almost three days into the search.

"If we do not locate in the immediate area, we have no clue which way to go from here.

Search teams have been out along the West Fork River near the girl's family home in Bendale.

The girl, identified as Aliayah Lunsford, was discovered missing Saturday morning when he mother went to wake her up and she wasn't there. The girl was last seen a few hours earlier wearing her "Dora the Explorer" pajamas and a pink sweatshirt.

Aliayah is three feet tall and weighs about 30 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes.

"She didn't feel well the night before, so when the mom went back to check on her a few hours later, she wasn't in her bed and that's when the search began," Lewis County Sheriff's Department Lieutenant D.S. Sparks says.

He says possible foul play has not been completely ruled out at this point. Lt. Sparks says police have been conducting "extensive and intensive" interviews.

A K-9 unit initially led police to the West Fork River, a community located just south of Weston. Sheriff Gissy estimates the water is less than 100 yards from the home, but family members have told investigators it is not common for the girl to make her way there.

"To their knowledge, the little girl has never been near the bridge or near the water," he said.

WAJR-FM News Director Reuben Perdue was on the scene Monday afternoon and says representatives of the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children were part of the search along with several area search and rescue teams and divers.

Here's a link re some info about the town of Weston. I've searched the web and can't really find anything other than what BBeba has posted. This is about 75 miles north of where I live and the only thing I have heard is they will continue to search tomorrow. It has been pouring the rain here for about an hour and according to the radar, Weston may not get it. I pray they don't. I have a feeling she's in the river

3-year-old Wearing "Dora" Pajamas Disappears From Bedroom

WESTON, WV -- K-9 dogs and hundreds of volunteers have joined authorities in West Virginia to look for a missing 3-year-old girl, but a sheriff's department lieutenant said in the two days since she was last seen that "we haven't come up with anything."

Aliayah Lunsford's mother and 9-year-old sister told police they saw the girl around 6 a.m. Saturday in a bedroom in their home in Weston, West Virginia, located between Charleston and Morgantown. The mother said she returned about three hours later to see the girl -- who had been sick the night before -- and take her temperature, but Aliayah wasn't there, Lewis County Sheriff's Lt. David Parks said Monday.

By that time, the girl's stepfather had already been picked up and left for work. The mother got in her car and drove around looking for the child, at one point running out of gas, said Parks. She called police to report Aliayah missing around 11:30 a.m.

A sheriff's deputy arrived within 10 minutes and a larger crew by noon, according to Parks. About 100 volunteers were on scene by the end of the day, alongside local, state and federal law enforcement agents.

The investigation so far has included search teams diving in nearby waters, interviews with relatives and neighbors, and a door-to-door search. That's in addition to searches conducted by volunteers. A bloodhound did detect Aliayah's scent in the vicinity of a nearby river, with a dog handler saying the girl likely had been in the area in the last three to seven days.

"We are still on it right now," said Parks of the search and investigation.

According to a poster from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Aliayah was last seen in pajama bottoms featuring the TV cartoon character Dora, a pink princess sweatshirt and no shoes. The girl is white, weighs about 35 pounds, stands 3 feet tall and has brown eyes and hair. She has pierced ears and is missing her top four front teeth.

The center characterized Aliayah as "endangered missing." But no Amber Alert has been issued for her, in part because authorities do not have a name or description of a suspect who might have taken her.

Parks said there were no signs of forced entry in the home, which the girl shared with four other children, her stepfather and her mother, who is pregnant with twins. There is a screen door, which does not have a handle, and a regular door, which doesn't shut very well, the lieutenant said.

He added that authorities have checked with "just about every sex offender in the county," getting alibis for them and not having indications that any were near the girl's residence at the time she went missing.

Surveillance video shows the missing girl's mother during her apparent morning search for Aliayah, but there has been no sign yet of the girl. Some people have been interviewed as many as six times, and polygraph tests have been administered, though Parks would not say to whom.

"We are interviewing everybody," he added, noting that no one has been identified even as a "person of interest." "Everybody is a suspect right now."

Lewis County Girl Missing
Posted Tuesday, September 27, 2011 ; 06:40 PM
Updated Tuesday, September 27, 2011; 08:50 PM

Aliayah Lunsford, 3, of Lewis County went missing Saturday morning. Officials say they still have no clues but are shifting their investigation.

BENDALE -- UPDATE Tuesday Sept. 27 6:40 p.m.

Almost four days into the search, and still no word from Aliayah Lunsford, 3, missing from her Weston-area home.

Wendy Alkire is one of around 1,000 volunteers who helped looked for Aliayah. Her search turned up cold and left her frustrated, like many others who want to help.

"You can't just disappear like that," she said.

Aliayah went missing Saturday between 6:30 and 9:30 a.m., officials said. Her mother called 911 around 11:30 a.m. Ever since, crews have searched for any sign of Aliayah, be it her purple "Dora the Explorer" pajamas or even loose dirt.

"Right now we have no theories to go on. I would consider anybody a suspect at this time," Sgt. Mike Posey with the Lewis County Sheriff's Office said.

Though the Lewis County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation that involves countless agencies, county officials said the FBI took on a larger lead role Tuesday. Changes also included expanding the search to consider abduction, and considering the home where Aaliyah lives a crime scene.

Officials said the Mountaineer Area Rescue Group will work through Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning to try to find her.

"We want to do our best to make sure we haven't missed anything so we're going back over," Special Agent John Hambrick of the FBI said.

And while the community has pulled together through volunteering, donations and prayer, leaning on each other is sometimes not enough; especially for Alkire, who has a daughter, 7, of her own.

"The neighborhoods are quiet. Everyone watches out for everybody. We generally know when somebody different walks through our neighborhood, so it's scary," she said.

Law enforcement said it is using all its resources. It asked anyone with information to call the Lewis County Sheriff's Office at 304-269-8251.

Search for missing girl continues, now in 5th day
By The Associated Press

WESTON, W.Va. -- Authorities remained tightlipped Wednesday about their investigation into the disappearance of a 3-year-old Lewis County girl but said the search is continuing and focused.

Police and hundreds of volunteers have been looking for Aliayah Lunsford since she vanished from her Bendale home Saturday morning. She's about 3 feet tall and 35 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. Her mother Lena Lunsford told police she was last wearing purple pajama bottoms and a pink sweatshirt.

FBI Special Agent Jon Hambrick told WDTV-TV that investigators are "regrouping, looking at where we need to go'' but said releasing details would be counterproductive.

He wouldn't say what information Aliayah's family has given investigators or whether he believes a crime has been committed.

"We have to look at it from all different angles -- the potential it's a missing child and the potential that it's an abduction,'' Hambrick said.

No Amber Alert has been issued because the case doesn't meet the requirements of that program, Hambrick said. Amber Alerts require a vehicle description or license plate number, and investigators don't have any.

"We're standing by waiting for visual sightings, if any, that have ever been made of this little girl since the day she went missing,'' said Sheriff Michael Gissy.

Aliayah's aunt, Sherry Prunty, said the girl's mother is eight months pregnant with twins, distraught and asking for privacy.

Lena Lunsford has four other children, from 9 months to 11 years old.

September 28, 2011 By John Clise - Special to The Inter-Mountain , The Inter-Mountain

The Federal Bureau of Investigations has joined in the search for 3-year-old Aliayah Lunsford missing since Saturday morning. The FBI will aid in a specialized search of approximately one quarter of a mile around the Dennison Street home in South Weston

According to Special Agent John Hambrick, there will be an extensive grid search of the area based on the missing child's age, air temperature and knowledge of the area.

"We want to make sure we hit every nook and cranny," Hambrick said.

The FBI also has introduced one of its mobile command centers to the search, which remains a search, Lewis County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Mike Posey said.

Posey described the search as a "rescue mission" and said that a body has to be discovered before it becomes a rescue situation.

"It is our hope she is found alive in the immediate area," Hambrick said.

Meanwhile, divers continue to search the waters using sonar and other available water resources. Other searchers continue to comb the area around the home.

Officers have canvassed the neighborhood interviewing neighbors and family members.

Posey told The Inter-Mountain that the child's mother, Lena Lunsford, said the doors of the rental home and all of the windows were secure the night of the toddler's disappearance. Additionally, Posey confirmed there were no signs of forced entry into the home.

No Amber Alert has been issued in the case because it does meet the criteria set to warrant an alert being issued, Posey said, adding that an abduction scenario has not been established.

At the time of the girl's disappearance, she was reportedly suffering from a cold and fever; however, she was described as "bright" and a "normal" kid" at a 4 p.m. press conference conducted by law enforcement authorities at Lewis County High School Monday.

Posey said there were seven people living in the house at the time of the disappearance. They were Lena Lunsford, her husband, Ralph Keith Lunsford, and five children. Police said Lena Lunsford is pregnant with twins and was away from home at a doctor's appointment on Tuesday as the search for her missing daughter entered its fourth day.

That search involved groups of six volunteers who were being set out to cover a predetermined area. Volunteers checked in and checked out during the search process.

"The public has been great," Posey said. "No volunteers will be turned away."

"We are getting reorganized," Hambrick said. "We are establishing the command center.

"It is a collaborative effort between local, state and federal agencies in this search."

While law enforcement is working on the possibility of the missing girl still being alive, they are not discussing specifics of the case in the public at this time.

Lewis County Sheriff Mike Gissy said the investigation will continue as a search investigation until it proves to be a different kind of investigation.

"We have more and more resources becoming available each day and we will use them all to their fullest extent," Gissy said. "We will take all the time it needs."

They do... And you're right, they are aged beyond their years. Likely from the things they have been exposed to at home. I don't think they demonstrate IV drug use in school and everyone is right, Lena has been in trouble multiple times with drug use. I can say what I say, not as rumor, b/c she was a close relative. Her "mother" married my dad, after splitting he & my mother up. After my dad passed in 2010, I was able to finally disown them. She was my step-sister. Her & her mother are real classy people. She needs all her kids taken away. Lena was in jail and Aliayah was around a month or so old (this was before my father passed)...I saw Lena's grandmother and she had Aliayah with her. She had Lena's other 3 kids living with her too. I told Jo Ann that when Lena got out, if she couldn't handle having that new baby with the other 3 little ones, that I would take her. Of course, she wouldn't go for that. I think about that every day...at least she'd still be here, safe & sound. Why didn't they just let me have her? 11 hours ag

Family’s home being treated as crime scene

FBI brings in child abduction experts to assist in search

September 29, 2011

The Federal Bureau of Investigations has brought in child abduction experts to assist in the search for 3-year-old Aliayah Lunsford, and the family's home on Dennison Avenue in Weston is now being treated as a crime scene, authorities said Wednesday.

The child reportedly was last seen sleeping in her bed early last Saturday morning. The FBI has now taken the lead in the collaborative investigation with the Lewis County Sheriff's Department and other agencies.

"We are gathering information on specific areas to recover," FBI Special Agent John Hambrick said Wednesday. "We are using a methodical approach. We are not discussing specifics of the case publicly. We are focusing on the facts and following the investigation."

Areas are being roped off to allow for the collection of evidence, and officials are asking the public to remain out of those areas.

Searchers and law enforcement officers are working under the assumption that the little girl is still alive. There is currently no evidence to suggest foul play, officials said. Officials said the 3-year-old was reported missing around 11:30 a.m. Saturday after it was noticed she was not in the house around 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Earlier this week, K-9 units led investigators to the West Fork River, about a half mile from the Lunsford home.

Hambrick said divers are being as thorough as possible in the search of the river and utilizing every resource available.

Hambrick said the public has been very forthcoming in making information available to law enforcement regarding the missing girl.

"We are following every lead and making progress in the investigation," Hambrick said. "We have had a good response from the public with information coming into the state police and sheriff's department."

Hambrick said he is confident people in the south Weston neighborhood are safe, and officials are making good progress with the investigation.

He added that some interviews were being conducted for a second time as investigators were "closing gaps" in information.

"Everyone is doing excellent," Lewis County Sheriff Mike Gissy said of the mental and physical condition of the officers on the scene. "We still have a lot of hours left in us.

"We went to a 24-hour-a-day search. It is a little unusual, but we felt it is necessary."

Volunteers at Bendale United Methodist Church have been serving food and beverages to the officers and searchers around the clock.

Volunteers are still welcome to help in the search. At this time, all volunteers must be at least age 18 and must sign in before being assigned to a team to keep the effort organized.

The search efforts are being staged at the Bendale church on U.S. 19, near Lewis County High School.

The investigation and search will continue until the missing girl is located, according to authorities.

We are now into day six of the search for a missing 3 year old girl from Lewis County. She has not been seen since Saturday. Crews are back out again Thursday trying to find her.

As of right now the FBI still has not released a lot of information. They say they will have some information at 2:00 p.m. The area outside Aliayah Lunsford's Dennison Street house is still being searched. Helicopters could be heard in the area for the first time today.

Right now there is no crime scene tape surrounding the house. Wednesday there was crime scene tape shown around the house, but investigators would not call the area an actual crime scene. Investigators say there is nothing to suggest Aliayah has been harmed and they are still looking at this as a missing persons case, and they vow to continue looking for her until she is brought home.

It isn't looking good for this poor child. It stood out to me that she had "lost" her front teeth at the age of 3. Sounds like probable neglect from being a bottle baby. Children do not lose their front teeth by the age of three. Sounds like the family has, and will continue to have, more children then they can properly care for. It will be interesting what all comes out about this family.

A noted Clarksburg defense attorney is making a plea to try and end the search for three-year-old Aaliyah Lunsford in Lewis County.

Defense attorney Tom Dyer says he will represent anyone who knows anything about the girl's disappearance free of charge.

"We will make arrangements to meet with you privately ahead of time," he said. "And then come in and turn yourself in and explain exactly what has happened."

"I will speak to you and handle this matter at no cost to bring a conclusion to this tragedy," he said.

Dyer says he hopes his offer will bring an end to the suffering for the family and community while saving tax payer dollars and man-hours being expended on the search.

Week long search becomes even more dire as temps drop

October 1, 2011

It's been a week since 3-year-old Aliayah Lunsford was reported missing from her Dennison Street home in the Bendale area of south Weston, and on Friday the Federal Bureau of Investigation re-emphasized its plea to the public for information.

"If anyone has any information about this little girl, please call 911 immediately," FBI Special Agent Jeff Killeen said at a Friday press conference conducted at the lower parking lot of Lewis County High School. "Time is a factor. The weather is changing. Seven days with no food, water and shelter is a long time.

"The goal remains to bring this little girl home safely. We believe someone has information about this child. We need that information now," he said. "Surely, someone knows something. A person doesn't just disappear into nothing like this."

More than 50 local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, along with many volunteers, have been working the case 24 hours a day. There are no suspects, and officials continue to follow up on leads. Although police will not disclose what type of evidence has been found, they did say it will be processed through law enforcement protocol.

Lewis County Sheriff Mike Gissy said his department is utilizing every available resource to follow up on leads, including any that may have come up outside the county, though he offered no further comment.

"We are having a change of force and bringing in fresh people," Killeen said. "We have tired people here who have been working many days."

There are no plans to decrease efforts, call off the search or cease the investigation of the disappearance of the toddler from her home.

"We are here to find the child," Killeen said.

As to whether the girl was abducted or just walked away from the home, Killeen said either scenario is possible. However, there is no evidence to point to either possibility at this time.

"We have taken a look at many people," Killeen said. "That's why we have so many law enforcement officers here."

According to Killeen, family members, neighbors and others have been interviewed in regards to the disappearance.

Volunteers are still welcome to aid in the search. Killeen said he expects many more volunteers and members of search groups to show up this weekend as work schedules ease up.

"We have a crisis situation here, and they know it," Killeen said of the expected increase in volunteer searchers.

The search area currently encompasses three square miles.

"Kids are very resourceful," Killeen said. "They can go a long way. I'm not giving up hope. I'm a dad. I wouldn't give up. I won't give up for any parents."

Aliayah Lunsford Still Missing on Day 7

Seven days have gone by without locating Aliayah Lunsford, 3. And with the Friday weather cool-down, the search is turning desperate.

"That's a long time for a child to survive in this kind of environment without food, water and shelter and exposed to the elements," FBI Special Agent Jeff Killeen said.

Volunteer search and rescue crews and K-9 units re-combed the West Fork River and its banks Friday. The FBI said law enforcement is surveying the area separately, looking for any clues or evidence.

But the question of what happened to Aliayah remains and the possibility of eventual charges is becoming more probable.

"There's going to be some type of consequence. In all likelihood it's going to be a criminal consequence," Defense Attorney Tom Dyer said. Law enforcement sought legal advice from Lewis County Prosecutor Gary Morris Friday and briefed him on the case.

Defense Attorney Tom Dyer has offered his services for free to anyone who comes forward with information on Aliayah's whereabouts. He said coming forward is in the best interest of a potential perpetrator.

"If you come in now, you are certainly going to be treated more favorably than if this thing continues to drag on and on," Dyer said.

"Surely someone must know something. A person doesn't just vanish out of thin air like this," Killeen said.

Still, the community and all the volunteers, wait and hope that she will be brought home safely.

The FBI said its volunteers are "exhausted," and new volunteers are welcome this weekend.

If you have any information about Aliayah, please call 911 or the Lewis County Sheriff's Office at 304-269-8251.
