John Travolta's Son Dies

Rand Memorial Hospital in the Bahamas tells TMZ the son of John Travolta died today.

We're told 16-year-old Jett was vacationing with Travolta and wife Kelly Preston. We do not know the circumstances of his death.

There have been reports that Jett was autistic, though Travolta has denied it, saying he suffers from Kawasaki Syndrome, a condition which often leads to heart disease.

UPDATE: 4:00 PM ET -- Travolta's attorney Michael Ossi says Jett suffered a seizure at his family's vacation home at the Old Bahama Bay Hotel on Grand Bahama Island. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful and he died on scene.

New Details on Death of John Travolta's Son

ET has obtained new information from the Royal Bahama Police Department regarding the death of Jett Travolta, the son of John Travolta and Kelly Preston.

Police have issued the following statement:

"At about 11:40 am on Friday 2.1.09, officers at the Central Detective Unit on Grand Bahama received information that Jett Travolta, 16 years, son of movie star John Travolta, fell ill while at Old Bahama Bay Resort in West End and is en route to the Rand Memorial Hospital in Freeport via ambulance.

As a result of this report, a team of officers were dispatched to investigate.

They received information at the hospital that Travolta was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Information is that the deceased arrived on Grand Bahama on 30th December 2008, aboard a private aircraft, accompanied by his father and mother Kelly of Encino Drive, California 91436.

They were staying at Travolta's suite number at the Old Bahama Bay Resort. Further information is that Jett suffered from seizures. He was last seen on 1st January 2009 when he went to use the bathroom at their residence.

He was discovered in the bathroom in an unconscious state around 10:00am on Tuesday 2nd January 2009. Arrangements are being made to have an autopsy performed, in order to determine the exact cause of death."

John Travolta's 16-year-old son has died, Basil Rahming, the Chief Superintendent of the Grand Bahama Police, confirmed to Usmagazine.com Friday.

Travolta's lawyer, Michael Ossi, told TMZ.com, which first reported the news, that Jett suffered a seizure Friday morning at his family's vacation home at the Old Bahama Bay Hotel on Grand Bahama Island.

He was taken to Rand Memorial Hospital in Freeport, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, Rahming told Us. An autopsy will be performed at the hospital.

Police spokesperson Loretta Mackey told TMZ that Jett hit his head on the bathtub. A caretaker named Jeff Michael Kathrain found Jett found unconscious in the bathroom around 10 a.m., Rahming told Us.

Jett's body will be transferred to Restview Memorial Mortuary and Crematorium in The Bahamas on Monday, a Restview rep told TMZ.

It's been reported that Jett had autism, which Travolta has denied -- instead saying Jett is inflicted with Kawasaki Syndrome (the six-year-old son of Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell has the same diagnosis), which can lead to heart disease.

Travolta called Jett "my baby" in an interview with the Australian media several years ago.

"He's my first, and he's my heart. And he's a very special boy," Travolta said. "He's Daddy's boy. And...we spend a lot of time together even though I'm pretty busy. He loves the outdoors and he loves to travel.

"He loves being on the plane. We fly in the ultralight together," he continued. "And...he likes to climb trees and swim."

Travolta and wife Kelly Preston are also parents to daughter Ella, 8.

The family arrived to The Bahamas on New Year's Eve, and planned on spending a week there, Sabrina Brown, a reporter at ZNS Bahamas News Network, tells Us.

Kawasaki disease is an illness that involves the skin, mouth, and lymph nodes, and most often affects kids under age 5. The cause is unknown, but if the symptoms are recognized early, kids with Kawasaki disease can fully recover within a few days. Untreated, it can lead to serious complications that can affect the heart.

Kawasaki disease occurs in 19 out of every 100,000 kids in the United States. It is most common among children of Japanese and Korean descent, but can affect all ethnic groups.

Signs and Symptoms
Kawasaki disease can't be prevented, but usually has telltale symptoms and signs that appear in phases.

The first phase, which can last for up to 2 weeks, usually involves a persistent fever higher than 104° Fahrenheit (39° Celsius) and lasts for at least 5 days.

Other symptoms that typically develop include:

severe redness in the eyes
a rash on the stomach, chest, and genitals
red, dry, cracked lips
swollen tongue with a white coating and big red bumps
sore, irritated throat
swollen palms of the hands and soles of the feet with a purple-red color
swollen lymph nodes

During the second phase, which usually begins within 2 weeks of when the fever started, the skin on the hands and feet may begin to peel in large pieces. The child also may experience joint pain, diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain. If your child shows any of these symptoms, call your doctor.

Complications
Doctors can manage the symptoms of Kawasaki disease if they catch it early. Symptoms often disappear within just 2 days of the start of treatment. If Kawasaki disease is treated within 10 days of the onset of symptoms, heart problems usually do not develop.

Cases that go untreated can lead to more serious complications, such as vasculitis, an inflammation of the blood vessels. This can be particularly dangerous because it can affect the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart
.

In addition to the coronary arteries, the heart muscle, lining, valves, and the outer membrane that surrounds the heart can become inflamed. Arrhythmias (changes in the normal pattern of the heartbeat) or abnormal functioning of some heart valves also can occur.

Diagnosis
No single test can detect Kawasaki disease, so doctors usually diagnose it by evaluating the symptoms and ruling out other conditions.

Most kids diagnosed with Kawasaki disease will have a fever lasting 5 or more days and at least four of these symptoms:

redness in both eyes
changes around the lips, tongue, or mouth
changes in the fingers and toes, such as swelling, discoloration, or peeling
a rash in the trunk or genital area
a large swollen lymph node in the neck
red, swollen palms of hands and soles of feet

If Kawasaki disease is suspected, the doctor may order tests to monitor heart function (such as an echocardiogram) and might take blood and urine samples to rule out other conditions, such as scarlet fever, measles, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, or an allergic drug reaction.

Treatment
Treatment should begin as soon as possible, ideally within 10 days of when the fever begins. Usually, a child is treated with intravenous doses of gamma globulin (purified antibodies), an ingredient of blood that helps the body fight infection. The child also might be given a high dose of aspirin to reduce the risk of heart problems.

How sad...it's hard enough to lose any loved one suddenly but when it's your child..

They took some criticism in the past for the autism concerns.. people claiming because they were Scientologists they were denying that Jett was autistic.

I really hope the media leaves them alone about that and just let them grieve.

John Travolta's Son Dies In Bahamas
16-Year-Old Suffered Seizure, Hit Head On Tub
Friday, January 2, 2009 – updated: 9:27 pm EST January 2, 2009

NASSAU, Bahamas -- Authorities in the Bahamas said John Travolta's teenage son, Jett, died after apparently suffering a seizure and hitting his head at his family's vacation home.

According to the police, a caretaker found the 16-year old unconscious in a bathroom on Friday. A statement said Jett had last been seen entering the bathroom on Thursday. He had a history of seizures.

A family attorney released a statement saying that Jett died suddenly Friday. A local police source said Jett apparently hit his head on the bathtub.

Jett was the oldest child of Travolta and his wife, actress Kelly Preston. They also have an 8-year-old daughter.

Preston has said that Jett became very sick when he was 2 years old and was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease, an illness that leads to inflammation of the blood vessels in young children. She blamed household cleaners and fertilizers. According to People magazine, she said that a detoxification program based on teachings from the Church of Scientology helped improve his health.

Very sad story.

I hope that the fact that they were Scientologists did not cause them not to seek proper medical treatment for him. I hope they did not just depend on the "detox program" by the Scientologists.

Also, it seems odd to me that he was last seen on Thursday going into the bathroom and "the caretaker" did not find him until 10AM the next morning.

John Travolta's wife Kelly Preston walks with the couple's son Jett during a Hawaiian vacation in May 2007.

btw looks like the photos that were posted above were from 2007 in hawaii.

either way, there is lots of questions for sure, how long was he in that bathroom before he was found?.......and did he take medications for his condition?

Dr. Gupta (sp?) said on LKL that that disease usually is only seen in kids up to around age 8. I doubt that it had anything to do with his seizure/fall.

I was on another board and a poster posted that she was friends with John's sister, and that John and Kelly did "acknowledge" his autism and had privately sought out help.

Now I take that with a grain of salt because anyone can say anything on a message board.

LKL was really good tonight about this. I feel just heartbroken for them. And......if they denied he was autistic, he had something else, well I see no reason not to believe them.

It's just very, very sad. They obviously just doted on him.

Preston, who also said Jett suffered from asthma, blamed household cleaners, fertilizers and pesticides for sparking the condition and lobbied for more detailed labeling on chemical products. She credited a detoxification program based on the writings of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard with helping to improve Jett's health.

In November Jett joined his dad in Paris, where Travolta has been shooting From Paris with Love. In 1994 the actor told PEOPLE how much he loved fatherhood. "I can't imagine what life would be like without Jett," he said. "After he was born and cleaned up, I held him for hours while Kelly slept. When they came to take him away for various tests, I said, 'No, you can't see him today. You'll have to do it another day.' I went a little nutsy."

I hope authorities don't pussy foot around this because the Travoltas are famous. If their belief in scientology caused them to not give Jett the proper treatment for his seizures, then imo they should be brought up on child abuse charges.

It definitely sounds like the child wasn't being watched. I have a feeling that if the story about him last being seen in the bathroom on Thursday was true, then he might have been dead for a very long time when he was eventually found. If that is true, then he wasn't being watched over very well. Also, if that is true, then the story that came out early about him having a seizure is probably not true. I have to wonder if he drowned.

There has been a video being whown on TV of Jett out in public with his father. It is obvious that John is having to lead the boy around by the shoulder and hand. I have a feeling the story that the neighbor in Florida is telling is true. Jett was severely mentally disabled and the Travoltas were denying it. The neighbor has said that Jett could barely read or write.

The Travolta's have lost a son they obviously doted on and loved more than life itself and it makes no damned difference if he was mentally disabled or a genius. They loved him and now they are going to have to bury their beloved son and their lives will never be the same again.

Losing our parents is something we all have to face sooner or later, and time heals those wounds because that is the cycle of life, but when parents have to bury their child there will never be closure.

The Travolta's neighbor allegedly said…..Jett could barely read or write….true or not makes no effen difference. Their beloved son is dead at the age of 16.

As prolific said, I really hope the media leaves them alone about that and just let them grieve.

Travolta's Son -- Fatal Blow to Head
Posted Jan 3rd 2009 12:36PM by TMZ Staff

TMZ has learned what may have killed Jett Travolta, and it's not what police have suggested.

We've spoken with John Travolta's lawyer and close friend, Michael McDermott, and family attorney Michael Ossi, both of whom are with John in the Bahamas. They tell TMZ it appears Jett's fatal injury was the result of hitting his head on the bathtub, toilet seat, or both. And they say the intimation that Jett went undiscovered for hours is absolutely false.

Police have said the last time anyone saw Jett was when he went to the bathroom on January 1. His body was discovered by nanny Jeff Kathreiin the next day at 10 AM. In fact, McDermott and Ossi say it appears Jett went back and forth to his room and the fatal injury occurred "very shortly" before Jett was found on the bathroom floor -- McDermott called it a "small window of time."

McDermott and Ossi tell us two nannies were present on the trip and Jeff was by his side 24/7. There was a baby monitor device by Jett's side and there was also a chimer in the bathroom when the door opened.

McDermott and Ossi say it is still unclear if Jett fell to the floor as a result of a seizure or if he had a seizure after falling or slipping. There was blood on the floor of the bathroom, but "not a tremendous amount." It appears the striking of Jett's head was the cause of death, though it won't be clear until the autopsy is performed Monday morning.

Jett's body will be embalmed Monday afternoon. There will be a local showing on Tuesday and later that day the body will be flown to Ocala, Fla. for burial.

McDermott says both John and Kelly are night owls. John often goes to sleep at around 5 AM. But McDermott says both nannies were at the hotel and Jeff always present.

McDermott tells us a hotel manager was first on scene with Jeff and the two of them administered CPR. John came in shortly thereafter and John took over for a "substantial period of time [and] was performing CPR and continued that until EMT came and took over."

McDermott says as for Travolta and Preston, the pain is "unimaginable and unquantifiable."

Bahamas' health minister requests 2 pathologists to oversee autopsy on John Travolta's son
By CHRIS GILLETTE | Associated Press Writer
3:08 PM EST, January 3, 2009

FREEPORT, Bahamas (AP) — The Bahamas will use two pathologists to ensure a careful autopsy on John Travolta's son, who died at the actor's vacation home in Grand Bahama, the territory's health minister said Saturday.

Dr. Hubert Minnis told The Associated Press that he decided to use a second specialist to guarantee a thorough assessment of what might have caused Jett Travolta's death.

The 16-year-old was found collapsed in a bathroom on Friday after having a seizure and hitting his head on the bathtub, said a police officer who declined to be named because she was not authorized to speak on the matter.

He was taken by ambulance to a Freeport hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police Superintendent Basil Rahming said in a statement.

A U.S.-certified clinical and forensic pathologist from Nassau will fly into Grand Bahama on Monday to help perform the autopsy, Minnis said. A possible cause of death likely will be known by the end of the day, he said.

The Bahamas is a haven for celebrities and Minnis himself was an obstetrician for Anna Nicole Smith, the former Playboy playmate who died from an accidental drug overdose and is buried in the Bahamas alongside her son.

John Travolta is trying to finish funeral arrangements and hopes to fly his son's body to Florida by midweek, said Michael McDermott, the actor's corporate and commercial attorney.

Travolta, 54, and his wife, actress Kelly Preston, 46, have a house in Ocala, Florida.

"It's heart-wrenching," McDermott said. "If you knew how much he loved that boy ... It was almost palpable. It was that strong."

Security was tight Saturday at the lavish Old Bahama Bay resort community, where Travolta owns a home.

"We are taking great steps to protect Travolta's privacy," resort spokesman Ryan Julison said. "Security is heightened because media is attempting to access the property."

The family arrived on a private plane Tuesday and apparently had invited 60 friends for the New Year's holiday weekend, including McDermott. It is unclear whether Travolta, a pilot, had flown his family in.

Jett was the couple's oldest child. They also have an 8-year-old daughter, Ella Bleu.

Preston and Travolta have said that Jett became very sick when he was 2 years old and was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease, an illness that leads to inflamed blood vessels in young children. Preston blamed household cleaners and fertilizers, and said that a detoxification program based on teachings from the Church of Scientology helped improve his health, according to People magazine.

"I was obsessive about his space being cleaned. We constantly had the carpets cleaned," Travolta said in a 2001 interview with CNN's Larry King, a portion of which was rebroadcast on the "Larry King Live" show Friday night. During that interview, Travolta spoke of how his son nearly died when he was 2.

It is unclear whether Jett was taking any medications for his seizures.

Travolta gained fame as Vinnie Barbarino on the 1970s television show "Welcome Back, Kotter" and the 1977 film "Saturday Night Fever" and went on to become one of Hollywood's biggest names. He married Preston in 1991.

Preston appeared with Travolta in the 2000 film "Battlefield Earth," based on a novel by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. She also has featured in numerous television series and in films such as "Jerry Maguire," ''What a Girl Wants," ''For Love of the Game," ''Eulogy" and, as the voice of the mother, in "Cat in the Hat."

McDermott said that following the death, "Kelly's kind of withdrawn to herself. She's dealing with it in her own way."

Jeremy Thayer, developer of the Ocala subdivision where Travolta owns a home, told the Ocala Star-Banner that Jett was a friendly teen who loved the outdoors and was often seen riding his bike or a golf cart.
