This is how Barbra Streisand lies around the house. Or, how she used to. The award-winning singer-actress-director and philanthropist, shown here in an Arts and Crafts and Native American-decorated room in her former Beverly Hills residence, is selling pieces from her collection of antiques and vintage home furnishings Oct. 17 and 18 at Julien's Auctions. Proceeds will benefit the Streisand Foundation, a nonprofit that supports environmental and women's health programs. A free public exhibition of the pieces runs from Oct. 10 to 16 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.

"Eighteenth century American furniture and the design of the architects Greene and Greene are my special love," says Streisand. As a result, she is auctioning nearly 500 items from other periods and styles: Louis XV and XVI, Georgian, Art Nouveau, Stickley, Frank Lloyd Wright and Art Deco. Click on for a guided tour, with commentary from Streisand, who recently released her 63rd(!) album, "Love Is the Answer."

The entry hall of Streisand's former Beverly Hills home was done in classic Arts and Crafts pieces including the large Teco vase and, by the stairs, a Stickley rocker. The superstar is not overly precious with her antiques.

"I sat and rocked in it all the time," Streisand says.

"I love pink and burgundy," says the ardent collector, who bought her first Tiffany lamp in 1964 after becoming a Broadway sensation in "Funny Girl." "Wherever I live, I always seem to do a burgundy room."

Here, a burgundy room in her New York apartment on Central Park West. The floral English needlepoint pillows on the sofa are part of a group of five estimated at $300 to $500.

In 1968, Streisand made the film version of "Hello, Dolly!"

"They asked what kind of furnishing did I want in the trailer," she recalls. "I said I wanted [legendary turn-of-the-century actress] Sarah Bernhardt's railroad car. And, boy, that's what I got."

This Victorian Rococo papier mache armchair with mother-of-pearl inlay, gilt and paint decorated details is valued at $300 to $500.

Streisand often builds the look of a room around a single object of her affection.

"I was doing a bathroom based on a lamp that had a matte black glass base, so I found this table with a marble top," she says of this Victorian-style library table with carved sphinxes and urns. "I was going to make that into the sink vanity and even had a backsplash made to fit the back. Then I found something better, so I never used it. The back piece cost $500 to have made, on top of $3,500 for the table, plus I paid to have it repainted. I don't know what they're selling it for, but someone is going to get a bargain."

(Psst, Barbra, it's valued at $600 to $800.)

After viewing a BBC drama, Streisand decided to do a blue paneled room in her current Malibu residence.

There was just one hitch: The George Smith sofa and chairs, which she had reupholstered in $200-a-yard red silk velvet and mustard fringe trim.

"I realized that the red was wrong," she says ruefully. "This set is divine, so comfortable; I wish I had a place for it."

A 16-inch-high cranberry cased and opalescent glass epergne with applied glass ribbon decoration, a central trumpet vase and three side vases, estimated at $400 to $600.

Epergnes are "for flower arrangements," Streisand explains. "They have a group of delicately blown colored glass vases for showing off flowers with little baskets at the base, where you can either put more flowers or little candies. I think they are French in origin, obviously the name is."

Does being Barbra Streisand give her an edge when she's out antiquing? Yes and no.

"Sometimes people will see that I like something, and even though I'd be happy to pay for it, they insist upon making it a gift," she says. "And other times, there are dealers who think they can charge me double because they know I can afford it. That usually doesn't work for them because I have a pretty good idea of what things are worth."

Barbra Streisand to auction items for charity
Highlights include costumes from ‘Funny Lady’ and ‘Meet the Fockers’

September 15, 2009

LOS ANGELES - Want to lounge in a wicker chair from Barbra Streisand’s sunroom? Perhaps wear one of her designer dresses or tinkle the keys of her baby grand piano?

Your chance is coming in October, when Streisand will auction more than 400 personal items to benefit her charity.

“What good does it do in storage,” the 67-year-old entertainer said. “Let someone else enjoy it. These things, they’re not forever. We pass them on and reap the benefits for something important.”

A collector throughout her career, Streisand is selling costumes from her films, including a dress from “Funny Lady,” a robe from “The Way We Were” and several outfits from “Meet the Fockers.”

There’s a gold Dior pantsuit Streisand wore to the 1986 Grammys, an old phonograph she bought when she was 18 and “one of the first pieces of furniture I ever bought: A dental cabinet. That’s hard to part with actually,” she said. “I wish I had room for it. I don’t.”

Dozens of dresses and suits, books, designer furniture, paintings and vintage collectibles are also being auctioned.

Streisand decided to part with items from her Beverly Hills, Malibu and New York homes because she’s “through with extra stuff.”

“The community is better served if I get rid of it and give all the proceeds to my foundation, which does really good work,” she said.

Costumes, art and memorabilia from Barbra Streisand’s personal collection go on the auction block, including outfits worn in some of her most famous performances.

She plans to donate all proceeds from the sale, scheduled for Oct. 17-18 at the Beverly Hilton hotel, to the Streisand Foundation, which supports women’s, children’s, environmental and political causes.

Among the beneficiaries: City Year, which Streisand said “brings together a core of diverse young leaders that provide vital resources to youth in local neighborhoods”; the William Jefferson Clinton Foundation (“We gave a big chunk to the climate change initiative,” she said); and the Cedars-Sinai Women’s Heart Health Center, which supports cardiac research for women.

“For decades women have been treated based on medical research done on men,” Streisand said. “So it’s about time that proper research be done and communicated to women so they’ll be more informed about their health.”

Highlights from the sale will be exhibited aboard the Queen Mary 2 during its trans-Atlantic cruise this month and then in Ireland and New York before landing in Beverly Hills, where the auction will be conducted by Julien’s Auctions.

Meanwhile, Streisand is working on an album for release in September and preparing to act and direct in “a couple of movies on the horizon.” She’s also making a book about her new home.

Parting with old possessions makes it easier to focus on the future, she said.

“I’m a collector, so one collects and collects and collects,” she said. “But now I have enough stuff and I want to concentrate on other things, so it’s a good time to clean (the) closets.”

The way she were: Barbra Streisand auction results

(photo at link)

http://tinyurl.com/yfm4dhg

What makes this lamp worth $30,000? Well, it's the work of Dirk Van Erp (1859-1933), an Arts and Crafts designer whose work has a market value starting between $5,000 and $15,000.

It doesn't hurt that this particular lamp also happened to be owned by the one, the only Barbra Streisand, pictured above as Hamlet in a portrait that sold for $2,375. On Saturday and Sunday, the superstar songbird raised more than $600,000 for her nonprofit foundation by selling memorabilia, antiques and home furnishings through Julien's Auctions.

The 30-grand copper lamp topped the results. Barbra's baby grand, a 1972 black lacquer Yamaha piano, brought in $11,250.

The bargain? A pair of antique silk Chinese slippers sold for $62.50. Such a deal.

Visit our updated photo gallery to see more results, including the fate of three Art Deco glass lamps that Streisand put up for sale because she fell out of love with the 1920s-'30s style. You can read about that in her Q & A.

Is that a recent picture of her....she looks fabulous. If she hasn't had any work done she is getting better with age.

I don't think that's a recent pic of her, if so it is touched up or something. But OMG she looks absolutely STUNNING in that photo, doesn't she. Gorgeous! I've seen recent pics of her "caught without make-up" and she truly looks awful, very aging.

I don't think it is recent either- the site just credited the photo "courtesy of Barbra Streisand". It didn't give any date. Savannah's right though - there have been some "harsh" recent photos of her that have circulated.

I don't think so - look at this one from a more side angle.

She has stated before that she would never have a nose job because she fears it would affect her voice. I believe her and just from looking at that side photo- I don't think she ever has. JMO

i do remember that....but there was innuendo that she has much later, although i can't find anything confirming that as a fact.

here is that whole gallery, i went back to 2004 and compared some, noticed a difference mostly in "the bridge" which was deviated, the 2009 photos above looks smooth.
